Finally - tweaked config - runs awesome

Finally, all the work has paid off. I’ve now been running the sim for an hour flying around and results are in!

Before
GPU 70+°C and 70+% load
CPU 60+°C and 90+% load
After
GPU 36°C and 20% load
CPU 34°C and 22% load

Computer Specs
CPU is i5 9600K - not overclocked
GPU is RTX 2080 Super - not overclocked
32GB DDR4 3600 RAM on dual channels
Corsair MP600 Gen4 SSD
Cooling is 240mm AIO Corsair
Admittedly, my 26’ monitor can only do 1080p, but I don’t feel the need for more than that.

What did I do?

  1. Use the GPU controller to control fan speed better. I run mostly around 50-70% fan speed. I can barely hear it.
  2. Use the NVIDIA controller to limit the FPS to 30. More than that is really not needed for a flight sim where I’m cruising at altitude or even winding between forested mountains.
  3. Remove the side off the case.

I hope this helps someone or two.

Thats not a tweaked config.

A tweaked config would consist of customised settings within the sim and via nv control panel or via other software such as nvidia inspector.

For most of us, opening the side of our cases is not an option, particularly as we don’t want our Hardware to be coated in dust

Good attempt nonetheless

If you need to do this then you have the wrong case. Not only is this potentially dangerous (children, pets, etc.) it also exposes the components to environmental factors, such as dust, pet hair, etc.

Perhaps I was unclear. I didn’t say these were revolutionary. Just that they had a much larger impact than I expected. I don’t like running a hot system, especially as I don’t have air-conditioning in my home office.
I customised the GPU fan speed levels - rather than the default.
AND
I used the Nvidia control panel whatever to control frame rate.
If it doesn’t fit your definition of tweaked config, I’d like to apologise for not having the same dictionary as you. Which version are you using?

I didn’t need to customise any settings in MSFS. I still run everything at Ultra.

I have 6 kids. 3 under 5. I clean my desk and computer every week. It takes 5 minutes.

Maybe not the best case, but it is a MasterCooler.

I have 6 kids, 3 under 5. Admittedly no pets, but the kids don’t touch it. Even when I put in the lounge room for the kids to use for their games on weekends - without the side on.
Dust is not a problem. It is cleaned every week, just like my desk and work computer is cleaned of dust too.

A tweaked config would usually be in the form of a configuration file which would be loaded by the game with custom settings rather than doing so within the game’s User interface.

Additionally doing stuff this way can expose settings not visible in the game graphics settings within the menu.

Obviously depending on the game engine and what the developers have allowed access to outside of the ui.

For example, games created on the unreal engine write .ini files to a few locations, each can be edited via a text editor ( note pad etc ) where visual settings not exposed by the game can be accessed and changed at will, This would be the definition of a tweaked config for many.

I dont believe flight sim has config files ( .ini / .xml ) that can be edited that way though, I’m unsure at the moment, Though I might dig through a few folders later where I suspect they may be saved to see what can be edited for greater performance without any loss in quality.

I can run the sim fully ultra at 4k too, Though I’d like to improve lower end fps and increase top end fps at the same time.

Thats the goal really when fiddling with configurations, finding that sweet spot to increase low and high gains.
