First post -hello - Specification help

Hey everyone,

During lockdown my nephew really enjoyed that realist flight sim Star Wars Squadron. Now that the little blighter has been sent packing i thought i might have a go at flight simming.

I have a 3950x 8gb ram and a rtx 2060 gpu.

I wish i could get a better GPU but really have you seen the market place? i like my scalp attached to my head thanks.

Any help on setting would be great.

First off… 8GB of ram isnt going to cut it. You really need 16 at a minimum. Second… what resolution are you playing at?

My setup has a worse CPU (3600) A 2060Super which iirc has 2GB more memory than you, and 32GB of ram@3200mhz. At 1080p it runs max settings virtually everywhere locked at 30FPS in most GA aircraft. The A320 will bring this setup to its knees.

So, as long as you wish to fly GA you should get fairly decent results in most situations but you’ll definitely have to turn things down. I suspect the 8GB of ram will cause a fair amount of stutter as well. If you want to fly airliners you’re going to struggle i think.

You will be fine but need at least 16gig of ram. The rtx2060 will be ok and look very good on 1080p. I’m running an older gtx1070 and looks great at 1080p with graphics settings a mix of ultra and high. Current setup is I7 9700K, 32gig ram,gtx1070 and everything on a 1TB nvme drive…very happy with it! You should be too!

Hi and welcome to the flightsim community.

Your 3950X is fine!
Your gpu could be better but will suffice for now.
You Ram on the other hand is insufficiënt.

I recommend for a smooth experience you need to do a Ram upgrade!! At least add another 8gb, but be aware, this must be the same RAM you have installed at the moment. Otherwise this might come with issues.
For the best experience go for a 2x 16 ram upgrade or even 2 x 32. and run it on 3200 mhz.
Consult your cpu and mobo manual for the best ram support!! Try to go for modules that are listed in the QVL of your mobo manufacturer.

This configuration should be enough to fly and enjoy GA aircraft smoothly. But not in 4K. I guess this should be enough for the medium preset.

Even 16GB may cause you problems, and RAM isn’t the most expensive component to get. 32GB to be safe, if you can comfortably afford it.

Not sure what HD you’re playing off of but I would recommend you run the sim on a SSD (doesn’t have to be an M.2 an regular 6Gbit will do). Otherwise the sim will take forever to load each time.

I’d double the RAM, for the trouble of placing new RAM I would expand to 32GB, trust you have space for it.

As for video, I’m not the expert on that, but if you look at the search box of this forum and type “2060” you’ll find issues. Consider upgrade. It depends on the power supply and slot room you have available. You could go for 2060Super (somewhat less complaints) or if your power supply can pull a 2080Ti or 3080 ?

I agree with SSD remarks… But my bottom line would be… first go 16G or 32G Ram, click Store and just try it out… :yum:

I have a rtx 2060 and 16gb plus ssd and have awesome performance at 1440, run at medium to high and have had only great experience, only 1 CTD in months. its an msi gaming laptop, latest Nvidia drivers. I fly Tampa Vegas a lot a performance just keeps getting better. I don’t know if its luck but I suspect gaming laptops are pretty well balanced machines rather than the incoherent struggle lots of higher end machines have. I sort of suspect that XBox release and optimization has something to do with it. Go for 16gb ram

thanks for that, i was thinking of the ram upgrade. I would love a higher end GPU but the market is just so rubbish, I’ll settle for 1440. I’m still at the crashing every to minutes stage. I’m thinking of doing a Youtube " learning to fly in MSFS" i really have no experience

If you are having stability issues I would suggest keeping it simple, and have no community mods installed at all. No overclocks either. Just run through the Cessna 152 training scenarios, and you’ll find your feet in no time.

There are some really good resources on YouTube as well.

Push it harder. RTX2060 runnning at 1440 with another monitor at 1080 at same time. MSFS on 27inch 1440 and Simtool kit pro and Navigraph on the 1080 24 inch monitor. NOT OVERCLOCKING. Balance fan and heat curve. I have to be careful because it runs at 79c. Cannot get my RTX3070 right now as we all know.
P.S High to ultra settings

I found woman called Emily on YouTube who is smart enough to break stuff down into eedjit sized chunks. Tell you what though, I’m a bit amazed at how expensive joysticks have become since my yoof and i can’t wait to get me grubby mitts on a VR helmet

I’m not big on overclocking, have you used an air duster on your GPU recently to blow the dust out? i do it every few months and it helps, the game had guessed at medium to high settings

In November it stop working. I took it apart and oil it with WD-40 and it has worked well since. I have great filters on my computer chasis and change those often. Every update of MSFS or Windows I have to check my fan speeds as they change. Two thngs I monitor very well is temps and dust control. Those are the keys.

Tend to agree with that… I’ve 16G (which is fixed, laptop) and I notice heavy stuttering and RAM use above big cities, especially London. When I look into the TaskMan I see 96-98% memory use (so I hit pagefile !)

Emily also has a Twitch channel, and has livestreams with group flights. Great fun!
