Flightsim.to New UI Reaction

MSFS addon 3rd party outlet Flightsim.to have just radically redesigned their online web store, receiving much negative reaction in the process.

What do you think?

Have at it :grinning:

Flightsim.to - Preparing for the Future: Introducing our Redesigned Platform

I find it much harder to find what I am looking for. I don’t mean that it is something that I must get used to, I mean that it takes more effort to get there.

Why wont the slider that sets the number of items per page remember what you choose universally or between sessions?

I liked the previous design and layout better.

I give it :-1: :-1:

Judging by the reaction on their own site and on Avsim I’d say it’s a 95% negative response.

I just spent some time exploring it and submitting feedback. Overall I think it’s a very poor design. Somehow it’s much worse than the old design (which was also not very good).

Having two menu bars, on the top and on the left, is cumbersome and clutters the page, confusing the user. The left bar features tons of empty space, which could have been filled with all of the content in the user profile menu instead (Wishlist, My Downloads, etc). As it is, it takes an extra click to find that profile menu, which is one of the main functions on the entire site as far as I’m concerned. Aside from the Home button, every other item on that left menu is useless to me too. Why would I want to see ā€œtop usersā€? The two-line hamburger menu on the top left is also unintuitive and worthless. I expect this button to reveal a general site-wide navigation menu, or at least to expand the left side bar and pin it or something similar. Instead it opens a couple random menu items they couldn’t find another location for.

Navigating content is more difficult and cumbersome. Each page only shows content in a grid of thumbnails. There’s NO details to compare at a glance, like date uploaded or last time updated. If you mouse over each item individually you see number of downloads, and that’s it. It’s pretty awful user design to make me scroll my mouse over every item if I want to see extra information. I want to just glance across them! And if I want to see more info, I have to click into EACH item! There is a slider that changes the size of the thumbnails in the grid, but it’s also worthless. Any smaller size than ā€œ3ā€ (btw the number over the slider gets bigger as the thumbnails get smaller… ) makes the text completely cover the thumbnail so I can’t see anything. And this slider does not save between pages, so every time I navigate to any page I have to move it all the way left so I can see anything. This should be two simple settings: grid view, or list view. List view should show details at a glance, just like in a file browser on your computer’s desktop. That’s intuitive design that matches user experience and expectations.

I could go on, but yeah, this isn’t a case of ā€œchange is hard!ā€ It’s simply poor web design and poor user experience. It’s more cumbersome, gives less information, requires more clicks, and behaves in ways contrary to user expectation.

Couldn’t agree more.

And quite frankly their response to the negative feedback was extremely patronising and in some respects downright delusional.

Moved to Tools & Utilities since this site is a source thereof.

On the new releases page there used to be an icon next to each item to add to wishlist but now it is gone and you have to actually go the page of the add on toe add it to wish list. That is not an improvement in my book.

Harder to find what your looking for. It’s trash

This is what happens when the ā€œbean countersā€ get involved, and its all becomes all about then driving the site to maximize subscription income. Usability goes down the tube, and I suspect many users will as well.

Yeah. I didn’t like the design before, but it was fairly usable. This does seem like a step backwards.

In addition to changing the size of the grid, there should be an option to view things as a list. I don’t need huge thumbnails to see a list my downloaded items.

Also wish I could save a list of planes I fly and only see liveries for those. I personally don’t need a home page filled with airliner liveries.

Its like a supermarket,

What you really want is placed at the back of the store, and to get there, you have to go pass all the other thing you did not now you wanted, in their hope you will make an addition, unplanned purchase.

It’s well known that people hate change generally.

I’m going to be dispassionate and say that, after careful consideration, I hate the change too!

Not sure how I feel to be honest. On first glance, it reminded me of those old ā€œDomain for saleā€ pages, especially with a wall of ads at the top. On further faffing, I was able to find liveries for aircraft which I did find confusing on the previous site as sometimes not all the liveries would show. I think the date of a livery should be given in the tile or even ā€œsim update X compatibleā€ without having to go in and back out again.

I have seen worse formats. I do most of my ā€œsurfingā€ on the site via the search, so. as long that works…

I like* how it no longer shows whether I have notifications of updates to download unless I click several times. Do not think I will be renewing my premium downloads subscription if they’re going to make it this unpleasant to use.

The old UI worked. It had its flaws but it worked.

If something works, do not change it. You may regret it.

For the new one, I’m only reading negative feedback. Just read through the site’s official announcement:

and then read the comments at the bottom of the page. Feedback is scathing.

I really don’t have free time in my life to be asking this question, but…any other web developers here?

Bad design.

I’ll probably regret answering that, but yes.

Ah now we all know!
