Flightsim.to New UI Reaction

In my defence, I didn’t design the .to site

I’ve not had chance to use it enough to form opinion yet but does seem like they lost some functionality for no reason. It wasn’t bad as it was so no idea why they’ve gone through the trouble of a redesign.

Meanwhile xplane.to keeps the previous UI.

Probably because the web framework du jour they built it with is now so last year that they can’t use it any more, so they have to rewrite it using a new one.

They should sell their old template to FlightSim.com or SM!

Well the search didn’t used to work properly at all. I would search for stuff I knew was there and it would give no results. eg “EGLL GSX” before would come up empty, now it returns the right answer. So something is better at least.

On the other hand…

Stay in the loop with the latest updates and new content in flight simulation. Your last visit was 0 second(s) ago.

Well no it wasn’t… 0 seconds ago is my current visit, my last visit was a while back.

On the plus side it seems faster.

But I also think the previous design was better overall even though it had gotten more and more cluttered over time.
Now it’s very cumbersome in some respects. I also don’t like the different sized preview pics. Looks like Pinterest. Not very easy on the eye and looks jumbled. I like my sites to be more orderly

The fact that I can no longer save a mod to the wish lost from the overview pages is also not ideal. And accessing the wishlist is now much too complicated.

What I found most disturbing was that they published a website that hadn’t even been finished yet. Many functions like the request section aren’t working at all.

Overall I find that tendency to reinvent the wheel all the time and everywhere idiotic. What happened to “never change a running system”. It’s not as if flightsim.to was terribly old-fashioned or dated to begin with. Also the flightsim crowd is used to really old stuff like flightsim.com and avsim which date back to 36kbit times.

I find this new webpage Awful. It’s more difficult to get to things now and it was much easier the way things were advertised (broken up ) meaning updates, trending now, new etc ….it’s awful

The website reacts faster. But that’s where it ends. I find it unpleasant on the eye, these Win 8 tiles have never looked good. The automatic rearrangement is confusing and generally all UI buttons are too small around the edge of the screen (4K screen) and too wide spread. The search in the top right corner and my downloads somewhere in the bottom left.

I just tried and search for “Da-62”. It gave me two replies on the Da62 and then it showed me something for Taog’s Huey, HPG H145, Zenith UL, Starfighter and some Scenery. At least nothing of that seems to be from their Payware store. But it’s confusing and has almost nothing to do with my search. I added the - in DA-62 intentionally. A good search filters it out itself and goes for the letters and digits.

All in all the website works but it’s not a good and thoughtful design. It looks like someone decided “we need to be different and modern”. I’m usually open for changes and progression but in this case the previous version was much better. Not perfect at all. But better to use, look at and navigate.

Was reading the comments and oh man, they got what they deserved what all that negative feedback. Some of those comments are comical.

This is it for sure. The bean counters weren’t happy with the fact that I could open a page with only new releases and not see their “news” or other cool things that they wanted to sell me. But apparently the masses have spoken, because the ability to see only new releases has been restored.

I was a web developer way back in the 90’s, but I did it for a major corporation and had somewhat of a captive audience so functionality was always more important than style. A lot of my “customers” sat ten feet from me, and I learned quickly the difference between constructive suggestions and those who simply hated change. In the case of the flightsim site’s comments, certainly there are going to be those who hate change, but I agree that most of the complaints were valid.

flightsim.to have been trying to commit suicide ever since they amended their terms a while ago. Crazy stuff.

I hate it. I went there yesterday for the 1st time in over 3 months. It’ll be a long tiime before I go back.

Yes it’s not very good, an ill thought out design, features of the old not in the new, messy is how I’d describe it.

that’s probably why they closed the Comment section after a 100% rate of 200+ negative comments.

Their reaction to those 200 negative comments in a nutshell is:

“Thank you so much. We really value all your input. Unfortunately we can’t read it all that’s why we’re closing down the comment section.
Don’t worry, all features of the previous version will come back over time.
And if you find it hard to navigate and use the new site: don’t fret, you’ll get used to it.”

Sounds like they are indeed deeply concerned about the fallout. :joy:
Well after they started their Premium accounts and implemented their new terms. They also started by completely ignoring the backlash before making concessions. Let’s see how long it’ll take this time…

This. Who the heck is in charge over there?

So I’m probably going to get lynched for this. But I’ll say it anyway.

I like the new site. For me it’s a good improvement on the last one.

  1. The search is directly accessible instead of hidden in a menu.
  2. The search now seems to work. Queries I tried before that didn’t return results now return something useful.
  3. It is much more responsive.
  4. The individual product pages are so much better organised now, they were a barely usable mess before, now they are nicely laid out.
  5. The category pages are quicker and easier to scroll through, with more content on each.
  6. The my downloads and notification centre seem to work OK still.
  7. The map is still there, a few things they could improve on it.
  8. I don’t use any of the other bits so don’t care what they’ve done to those.
  9. Works OK on my phone too.

What I don’t like:

  1. The replies to comments on the product pages are hidden and need to be individually clicked on. This is very cumbersome. Adding to those replies is even worse.
  2. There’s a horrid voting bar that floats over the product pages and gets in the way and I can’t figure out how to get rid of it.

Hopefully they’ll improve some of the obvious things that can be improved, they should certainly have an incentive to improve it given the community reaction but I personally prefer the new direction.

“Progress is an ongoing journey, and in order to continue growing, we must constantly evolve and innovate. Time does not remain stagnant, and it is essential to embrace change and development to stay ahead”

What a crock of marketing speak that load of baloney is!
I’m failing to see the “innovation” part of their redesign.

“We understand that navigating through changes can pose some initial challenges, but we are confident that this is just a matter of getting used to in its initial phase.”

Ah, the old “You’re all a bit stupid but you’ll get used to it if you really, really try” routine.

Both their design team and PR team need to find a new line of work, they clearly aren’t very good at what they do.

Err… is that quotes from MSFS 2024 marketing?
