The Highway That Goes To Sea
Driving from mainland Florida down the Overseas Highway, it’s easy to understand why the southernmost leg of U.S. Highway 1 is often referred to as the “Highway that Goes to Sea.”
A modern wonder, the 113 miles of roadway from Key Largo to Key West incorporates an astonishing 42 bridges leapfrogging from key to key in a series of giant arches of concrete and steel over the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.
Leg 1: 07FA (RW23) - FA81 (RW26) - 24NM
We start our journey at the Ocean Reef Club Airport taking off on runway 23. Right after take off we will follow County Road 905 until we come to US Route 1 which we will follow the rest of the trip. When we get to FA81 we will not be landing but will do a touch and go and continue on.

Leg 2: FA81 (RW26) - KMTH (RW 25) - 33NM
After our Touch and Go we will turn left and continue do follow US Route 1. After landing at KMTH we will take a short 5 minute break.
Leg 3: KMTH (RW 25) - FD51 (RW 30) - 22NM
After departing, we will continue straight out following US Route 1 on the way to Summerland Key Cove (FD51) where we will take another 5 minute break.
Leg 4: FD51 (RW 30) - 7FA1 (RW 28) - 8NM
This leg is just a short hop to Sugar Loaf Shores (7FA1) so you don’t need to get too high for this one. Instead of landing, we will be doing another touch and go and continuing on.
Leg 5: 7FA1 (RW 28) - KEYW (RW 09) - 11NM
Our final leg is to Key West International. Instead of flying straight in to RW27 we will join the pattern downwind for RW09. Pattern altitude at KEYW is 1000’.
