FlyByWire A32NX developer complaining about the sad state of the developer / third-party experience

Your profile indicates that you created 9 topics - 3 of them in the SS gallery 1/3 of your focus is screenshots - simple math. Not a judgement but an assessment as to why there is such a stark contrast in the forum about MSFS.

The rest of my post is one side of the contrast that is concerning to me and scores of others. The side you are on (not a “bad” side) is getting too much attention, the side I’m on (again not a bad side), is getting very little attention.

This contrast is too stark - everybody needs to be somewhat happy and because so many are not happy, I lay out my views as to why and why I think its a serious problem.

I’m not against you, I’m just amazed as to how such a stark contrast exists in this forum. More and more its plain to see.

For anyone who is still concerned about “Asobo aren’t doing anything to support developers” or “they’re trying to cripple modders”, take 5 minutes to read this lengthy post from a well known commercial developer at Avsim proving the very point I made earlier: they are listening and they are improving things. Maybe they could throw the A320 folks a bone, but we’ve covered that ground. At what point does “helping out one freeware team” become “spending an inordinate amount of time doing dev support for modders while folks like FSDreamteam are waiting for their more important features”?

The thing that I take from all this is that one or two people either involved with this project, or big advocates for it, are acting like they’re doing everyone and this sim using it a huge favour having rode in to town to save everyone, so should be treated accordingly. Whoever running that show needs to muzzle a couple of their little lackeys because they’re not doing them and the work they’re trying to do any favours. Reel back the hubris kids, you aren’t that important.

Personally I think that some of the possible reasons why Asobo havn’t gone running off to them cap in hand are well thought out and have merit.

Oh. My. God. I was afraid that you would say this. That’s because I don’t go out there and start a gazillion of “we’re all gonna die! Asobo fix this asap!!!11!!!” kind of threads!

I am interacting with existing questions, comments and issue reports. And I did not keep count of them, but let’s just say it’s over a hundred.

Now you do the math!

These were my thoughts as well. Everyone agrees and has said it more than a ‘few’ times, the sim was released too early. But, here we are, and all we can do is wait now.

The Asobo Devs have their hands quite full i’m sure of that, and there’s only so much of their spare time to go around.

We all appreciate the hard work of the modders, I sure do, and hope they don’t get too discouraged by lack of communication. In time I’m sure it will get better.

One thing this all proves, is just how passionate we all are about flight simming. We’re all pulling for MSFS to be the best it possibly can, unfortunately It’s never fast enough.

About this im a beta testing for them and everything is still riding on ASOBO to fix a lot of things.

Correct…same thing happened when we were beta testing FSX way back in the day. We were still waiting for some large issues to be fixed and they sent us a NOTAM that beta testing was ending. Remember the garbled playback in FSX that is still there…that was a number one issue on the fix list! What can we pee-ons do? Nothing really!

Wait what. We allow personal attacks in PMs?

Well that makes perfect sense now. In one post you hide behind a language barrier because I pull you up on exactly what the fault is, and in this post, you articulate it exactly. Please don’t hide behind the language barrier as an excuse. I’ve worked for a European company for 5 years working with people in France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Romania etc. I understand language difficulties.

I’ve also worked a service desk as an engineer and managed it as a manager, and understand the difference between language difficulties and those (including native speakers) that just can’t be bothered to articulate a problem properly. “It’s broke” is my all time favourite…

If you think there’s such a thing as bug free software, you’re living in a dream world. Literally a fantasy.

Battlefield 4 (back in 2017)

  • You’d save s ingle player campaign and sometimes it would lose it.
  • You would get a black screen when you launched the game
  • It would display in full screen mode even though you had selected windowed mode

FSX (I just pasted this in for a laugh from another site)

  • DX10 support, “Preview” mode: legacy scenery may not work properly (Details here)
  • Some users report signifiantly improved performance, mine was about the same
  • flight list is alphabetized (yay!)
  • Com1 radio sync fixed in Shared Cockpit
  • Transponder Code update info now sent from inc/dec transponders (now reported as not fixed)
  • “random” spawn-in air problem fixed
  • direct connect now remembers last IP address
  • autogen batching is tweaked, resulting for some in increased performance. This will help in areas where a lot of custom objects of the same material are authored and complements the SP1 batching work.
  • some non-textured materials for FS9 objects are now fixed, in particular FS9 AI aircraft that turned black at a distance will no longer do so
  • 8-core bug fix
  • 3G enabling FSX and Autogen memory use (see this thread)
  • optimization
  • Exterior shadow quality improvements
  • optimization of terrain input/output for photo-scenery and “scenery load out of the zone” fixes to help reduce blurries
  • 737 and A321 night/taxi light fix with new models
  • raindrops in 2D cockpit
  • audio fix for sound card/USB to speakers/headphones on Vista
  • various internationalization fixes
  • saving undocked panels
  • multiplayer compatibility with Acceleration for free-flight

What doesn’t work as well as SP1:

  • FS9 objects with transparency may not display properly
  • Memory usage is increased, resulting in increased likelihood of out-of-memory errors (the dreaded OOMs)
  • Users report greatly increased incidence of flashing clouds. See this fix from “Mike”:http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=121&topic_id=434059&mesg_id=434059&page=Just be aware that after some further testing I’ve discovered two minor issues with it, which I’m still working on. Some global scenery objects refuse to respect their LODs and come in as max lod only, so fps can take a bit of a dive in places like seattle with all the port cranes. The other is that multiple layers of cumulus clouds don’t sort quite as well as before, not that they ever did haha.

BF2142update 1.0.5

  • Ground Defence kills now count towards Ground Base Defence Ribbon
  • Using the Medic Hub now counts towards Silver Medic Excellence Badge
  • Silver Titan Destruction - Badge awarded when core is destroyed
  • Debriefing End of Round screen displays player stats
  • Enemy Squad Leader Spawn beacon is no longer visible on the 3dMap
  • Can now bind same key to crouch for common and land vehicles
  • User now unable to repeatedly spam a squad leader to join a locked squad
  • Spinning tank turret no longer pushes player inside clipped geometry
  • Users can play single-player (offline) mode when EA servers are unavailable
  • Fixed issue that caused Battlerecorder Playback And Camera Control Interface function
  • Corrected missile silo numbers in Titan Mode
  • Squad Leader Spawn Beacon can now be used after a round or map change in online games
  • Missing game information in Swedish and Danish when a mutiny occurs against your commander added
  • Inconsistent game references removed
  • BF2142 showing up as Battlefield 2 in Windows firewall exception list fixed
  • Patching update message will shut the game down instead of minimize if EA Download Manager is installed on users machine
  • Stats tracking optimizations
  • Revised AR’s deviation per bullet
  • Titan no longer moveable by the Commander once Titan shields are down
  • Installer checks for BF2142 running in the background before installing UPDATE
  • Improved player collision protocol
  • Optimized EA Master Server connection calls

Bottom line to this post is WAKE UP!!! There is no such thing as a perfect game. Developers put their trousers on one leg at a time in the morning AS WE DO.

Idiotic ranting for imperfections makes you part of the problem not part of the solution.

Not speaking for who you’re arguing with, but can you also understand that they did not do well on the latest patch. Perhaps is average for the industry but there’s definitely gaming companies out there that don’t introduce regressions in patches. We’re not asking for bug free. We’re asking for better code releases (major or minor).

I’m a 3D artist working in gaming for almost 2 decades and a modder since my teen ages (DooM days). I have seen developers release modding tools, SDKs, documentation, whole sites with informations. But Never in my life I’ve heard of a developer that promptly responds directlty to emails and gives DIRECT support to modders. I’m not saying that never ever happened in the hystory of this media, but I find the “frustration” of these modders really a bit (well, a lot) naive.

I wish them all the luck in the world, but it’s really a moot point to argue about something like that.

It’s one thing to release a product with bugs, I doubt many people complaining about that. Its another thing to release a product missing core features that were advertised and hyped for the past year as being in the product and fully functioning.

Many of the bugs in MSFS are completely game breaking for some people. Others were fed a false narrative about the kinds of activities they could perform in MSFS. They claimed this game was built with the flight sim enthusiasts in mind but the release looks like that was the furthest thing from their mind as they would have made sure basic autopilot functionality was present and the live weather (which is really not live weather at all its forecasted weather and not nearly the same as live weather) broken.

On topic though I can see why Asobo hasn’t responded to FlyByWire. I wouldn’t really want them taking time to deal with freeware 3rd party developers at the moment anyways. They need full hands-on-deck fixing the problems and delivering what they promised before they can move on to issues like dealing with 3rd parties, especially freeware builders. As much as I would love to see them communicating with them they just have too much other pressing issues to attend to.

All things considered there are not any excuses for them to release this product with as many SERIOUS bugs and issues that they ended up doing. It’s frustrating to keep seeing people excuse them for the state of the release. Tired of seeing people tell me to go fly a GA aircraft because airliners are awful. This release is not on the level of previous MSFS releases as far as the level of issues and playability. MSX for as many performance issues it had and itself had an awful launch DID NOT have the same kind of issues with aircraft systems and avionics, aircraft performance, etc. The issues are destroying the playability for many many simmers who thought they were getting a product that was supposed to be “As Real As It Gets”.

No, it fits totally into the heritage of the Publisher, it would not be part of the family if it did not have a BSOD, CTD, long updates, patches to fix patches or, a washing machine to watch here or there, in fact I think they’ve payed Asobo to do it intentionally
Looking forward to when they get it fixed and I reckon it will not be that long…
The other issue about the free mod and thinking about this, if they were to open up the SDK what incentive would there be for the 3rd parties who have signed up for the partner program.

Define better, if not bug free then?

Beta forum is still able to look into. The archives are available to read. Go and read all I said as an engineer and 18 year flight sim pilot.

We’ll see what the next patch does.

  • VFR, C152, no autopilot, no ATC communication flying is wonderful in MSFS.
  • The screenshots from MSFS are beautiful.

However:

There is an absolute certainty. And that is, until a reasonably realistic IFR flight can be reasonably completed consistently day to day, in any default aircraft of choice, the complaints will get much louder, and the numbers will increase as time passes. This forum is not the only place this will happen.

If anybody claims that a reasonable realistic IFR flight is possible block to block, please post an unedited video of a 1 hour IFR flight proving this. From the time you click the MSFS “run as administrator” until the engines are shut down at a parking spot/gate. Nobody can do this. They will have to leave out AI air and ground traffic, or they will have to not use ATC or the default planner, or they will be compelled to try it without an autopilot, or a fair weather theme instead of live weather and on and on. All of these are unacceptable excuses, because omitting these aspects eliminates reasonable and available realism.

The opposition to the complaints will not stop the complaints. Soon the opposition to IFR will be ignored. It may be that IFR fliers will just have to accept that MSFS is primarily going to be a VFR sim for some years.

If IFR flyers feel the need to abandon MSFS because of stagnation or other reasons, scores of 3rd parties will likely follow them.

The only possible saving grace for MSFS is that many if not most IFR fliers do enjoy VFR flying too. And this is why the complaints will boil over. Workarounds will only help to a point.

All I can ask is that VFR “only” fliers please understand that IFR “only” fliers would like to enjoy MSFS too…its not asking too much.

My heart goes out to the moderators here.

You and I have access to them as we were in the program. CaptainsHIGH was not part of the program and does not have access to the archives.

Better is less bugs. Less obvious bugs would be a start.

Honestly, I’d read from the beginning. Everything mentioned is a bug.

Where? I asked the same of the last person. Show me a core feature advertised, that isn’t in this simulation. An actual link.

Trying to compare previous versions and their faults to this version and its faults makes about as much sense as trying to compare nations Covid-19 infection rates.

The Italians and the French, to name but two, have a completely different level of social integration than the UK, more tactile (‘touchey feeley’) typical cheek kissing on meeting etc. How the hell can you compare the two when your way of life is so different.

Asobo are different to ACE. ACE screwed up performance big time. 7 out of 10 approaches ended in a FSX crash for most people. Asobo haven’t got elements of aircraft right yet, but it’s never crashed on me yet.

It’s all annoying, it’s all normal.

Still new… Still working on fixes… STILL, not the only game with annoying bugs and won’t be the last. It’s not an excuse, it’s life.

I’ve spent 8 months so far, watching VMWare flap and scramble, over a performance issue on a hypervisor with one of my customers production workloads. They still can’t fix it. We’ve had to invest an extra £15k on a server to help fault find the issue. VMWare!!! How big? How much of the planets infrastructure runs on it? Government? Ministry of defence.

It happens to everyone. Get over it.

The discovery series are the actual proof. Live weather, watermasking, highly detailed orthophotos, highly detailed and functioning cockpits, all airports in the world, ect, Almost every single feature that they hyped in their discovery series is either not functioning as they advertised/intended, or they are completely absent from the final release.
