Flying helicopters question

I am using the Hotas X to fly right now. If I fly a helicopter, can i use this same device? Or do I need to use entirely different device with collective etc. ?

If I ‘can’ use this, can i have 2 different configurations? 1 for airplanes and one for helicopters?

I don’t have the Hotas X, but using my thrustmaster joystick, I haven’t had to change anything when flying a plane or a helicopter.

You can fly it with whatever you want. I sometimes even fly the H135 helicopter with an Xbox One controller on my laptop! You need stick and rudder control. A throttle axis makes it a lot easier, but even the button throttle control on the xbox controller works.

yes, you can save custom configurations for any of your plugged in devices (rudder pedals, yoke/joystick, etc). in the game.

for example, i disable the rudder twist motion in my extreme 3d pro joystick for heli use (use my rudder pedals for it) and have a saved configuration for it. my other configuration, that feature is enabled since i like the option of having the rudder movement via either the pedals or joystick when using GA aircraft.

Thanks to all those who replied to my question. Now I’m going to look into the heli’s.

Thanks again!!

I have a hotas X and I fly both in planes and in helicopters without any changes, only gliders require a custom configuration (trottle becomes airbrakes)

I agree with most everyone here, that you can fly a heli with just about any controller. However, with my experience on FSX, I would add that without some kind of rudder pedals, helis are very difficult to fly.

That sounds good. I would prefer to use same config. Thanks for input.

I don’t think there is a proper helicopter flight model yet. The 3rd party one just uses fixed wing controls. I tried flying it with my collective and it doesn’t respond properly.
Can’t wait for the helo flight model to be included and we start getting some real world flight physics like DCS.

I would say the H135 is very good for a (free) addon without any dedicated support from the main application. Of course Huey, Mi8, Mi24, etc.. in DCS are completly different level…

For flying Heli I recommend pedals/throttle/joy . As a first alternative for pedals can be a joystick with a z-axis ( e.g. where the stick can be twisted ) .
