Fortress Cities

There are quite a few well-preserved fortress towns from the 1500s-1600s. Bastions and outworks all laid out with geometric precisions. Examples like:

  • Palmanova, Italy: 45.905658, 13.308079
  • Neuf-Brisach, France: 48.017843, 7.527913

But to me, the prettiest ones are Dutch, due to having so much water involved. I recommend

  • Heusden: 51.733970, 5.138518
  • Naarden: 52.295261, 5.162088
  • Willemstad: 51.692541, 4.438284
  • Fort Bourtange: 53.006763, 7.191907
  • Brielle: 51.903852, 4.164203

Awesome! I rode my mountain bike in a race near Palmanova when I lived in Italy! I forgot the name until I just read your post. I’ll add it to my growing list!!!
