FPS performance - VRAM bug?

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?
Yes

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:
7800X3D, RTX 4080
MSFS 2024 with SU1
FPS will just drop to 5-10 FPS with VRAM being about 95%.

If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:

the performance is a disaster I have a very good system and I have big lag, it’s awful. I completely deleted MSFS 2024 and reinstalled everything new, and lags everywhere. I tested MSFS 2020 with much higher settings, it’s extremely smooth and 100 fps on average

MSFS 2024 is wasting my time. I have spent more time in troubleshooting and restarting the sim due to sudden fps drop which never recovers until I restart the sim than having meaningful sessions.

Reporting in briefly from SU1 after a reinstall. I was able to load into the default A330 at the handcrafted KJFK with high settings and not immediately be out of vram. I was at about 10.3 to 10.5GB out of 11 gb with my 3080ti but no overrun. Turning down trees and buildings to medium and the TLOD to 50 got me under 10gb of vram. Definitely a step in the right direction for me.

Is it also the VRAM bug that your vram filles with 12GB when only in the ui and not even loaded a plane or looked at a plane?

I think that’s because the sim is loading the entire world in the background, which is meant to be a feature of the sim, not a bug. In 2020 it took time to load one version of the earth for the World Map, and then had to unload it and load an entirely different one when you began your flight, which accounted for some of the long load times most users still see in 2020. In 2024, that loading starts the second you get to the Main Menu, which means your flight loading time is decreased because it has already pre-loaded much of what it needs (in some cases I can go from the “start flight” button to in my aircraft in fewer than 15 seconds, which is amazing).

very well explained
although, in my view, if you are going to do that, then you gotta do it right
if its going to explode the vram then it’s of no use

Performance overall has been a lot better for me lately, but one area that still concerns me is the way the sim seems to not release VRAM entirely after use. Here are two identical flights in a 152 in the middle of nowhere. The first was the first flight of that sim session, the second was after having previously loaded an A20N at a gate at KJFK. Clearly some of the VRAM being used in that higher-stress scenario never got released, resulting in a 53% VRAM usage increase between the first and second visits to the middle of nowhere with a 152.

Pre-KJFK:

Post KJFK:

Another user suggested this is (unfortunately) a common occurrence among titles that leverage DX12, and while I can understand that puts some of it out of Asobo’s control, DX12 is still a Microsoft product that we can hope sees improvements over time.

As far as I am concerned (aka read it on the forums) this is not an issue of DX12 but a feature. It is giving memory management into the hands of the developers. If it’s not done right you run into problems.

If true, then this remains a Microsoft problem because it’s occurring with no addons.

In the DEV Stream it was said, an issue with VRAM and raytracing has been found. How many of us had VRAM issues only with RT on? For how many did disabling raytracing do the trick?
To be honest my hopes for SU2 are not too big…

I thought the same. I´m afraid I´m personally going to stay in 2020 more time than expected.

I have raytraced shadows off and still run out of VRAM even on low/medium details and things like TLOD at 50.
Unacceptable.

Didn’t they also say airports needed optimization? I’m going to try SU2 beta before I criticize what Vram bugs and other fixes it may or may not have.

Definitely giving it a try. Personally I just thought it was little progress for a dedicated chapter in the deck. Regarding the airports we will see. As far as I remember, some people even reported issues on smaller airports with smaller aircraft. Or even 3rd party airports.

Your telling me they only found 800mb of a leak and its for people who ONLY have Ray Tracing turned on? What the hell is going on here? I’m running everything on medium and getting a mere 7.2 FPS with a 3070Ti. All raytracing is OFF. This is completely unacceptable. When they told us 3 months ago that this would be all fixed up in SU2 I was genuinely excited, especially as we are so close to its release. Now it looks like SU2 is going to do basically nothing to help with this.

Anyone knows what is “Allocs >8MB” means please? Is it related to vram usage in any way? I was testing Frame Generation flickering and stuttering issue and new dlss4 performance for friends. I was observing “Allocs >8MB:” was going from 43us to 968us most of the time. I am waiting SU2 beta to test Vram improvements.

There you go. I experience exactly the same thing. This is wild. The fact that running RT off and all medium with 8GB more VRam results in single digit fps is just “disrespectful”.

Curious, what’s your performance like in a 152 in the middle of nowhere? I fear that this is the scenario by which they defined minimum/recommended/ideal spec. Certainly not defending it, but just curious if your performance everywhere is broken, or just in “high demand” areas.

My take on it is he said they found a leak with Ray Tracing. He didn’t include what they may have found with other Vram bugs.

Turning on Ray Tracing has affected many users in a bad way and that may have been the reason he was explaining that part of the Vram issues. I’m happy they pinned that down.

Surely they know not everyone uses Ray Tracing and some of those people still have Vram issues.

I am going to reserve judgement until SU2 beta is released which if I heard correctly will be on the 20th if not before.
