FPS performance - VRAM bug?

I just wish someone in layman terms would tell me what this VRAM is all about? I get lost very quickly - my spec

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7900X3D

Cooler: Corsair H150 RGB Liquid CPU Cooler

Motherboard: ASUS TUF GAMING B650-PLUS WIFI

GPU: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070 WINDFORCE OC 12GB

Memory: CORSAIR VENGEANCE RGB DDR5 RAM 64GB (2x32GB)

Storage: WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB NVMe M.2 SSD

PSU: MSI MAG A850GL PCIE5 Power Supply (850W)

Case: CORSAIR 6500X Mid-Tower ATX Dual Chamber PC Case

Fans: 6x Corsair iCUE AR120 RGB Digital

Update to my scenario.
I’ve targeted Ray Traced shadows as what pushes over the VRAM at KJFK near terminals. It seems that Ray Traced shadows around the airport are causing mass memory strain in the system. Can everyone try this scenario?

Ray Traced shadows OFF
at KJFK with the default INIBUILDS A320. Parked at a gate. I recommend Terminal 4 or 5.

Basically think of it a RAM that your GPU carries. The VRAM loads in textures among other things. The more that it loads the more the GPU has to move. It seems that the simulator is not offloading RAM as it goes, or theres one setting that’s causing the VRAM to get to its max. When this happens the simulator begins slowing down to snail speed.

I found exactly the same at other airports, e.g. Pyreegue’s EGPH v2 - Raytraced Shadows pushed VRAM usage over the limit.

It would be great for everyone else to try this at a handcrafted airport with a complex airliner and post your results.

So is RAM and VRAM the same

No. “RAM” is your system’s main memory. “VRAM” is the special high-speed video memory available directly on your video card.

thank you Knight, hello everybody how’s it going, can you hear me in the back? good

The code of game rendering engines is, or should be, packed tight, and i mean TIGHT. The execution needs to be fast, so the thing needs to be optimized and optimized and optimized over and over and over to achieve the smallest code possible, because a bloated code will never perform as needed. This means that going back in there to change something is a pain. Because once you have it running good, if you start changing things it might end up worse than before. Think about it as trying to get a beer can from the back of a fridge that is stacked full of beer cans from the bottom to the top. You can do it. But its very easy to bring the whole thing down if you are not careful.
mmmmmm this analogy made me thirsty… be right back

Also having horrendous performance on an RTX3080 on Medium/High settings. Lowering the settings has zero impact, this is some other issue. 9-12fps at KLAX and 7fps at JFK. GPU shows to be 100% but its drawing half the power draw compared to other titles when the GPU is at 100% (including MSFS2020). RTSS shows VRAM usage below the 10GB, but Dev Mode is showing the full VRAM used.

7800X3D and 64GB DDR5-6000 RAM.

The bold part is the key.

VRAM is 10X faster than RAM.
When VRAM is used up, RAM is used to fill the gap.
Because RAM is so much slower, the sim slows down.

You should try turning off the Dev Mode. It will leave the FPS counter showing with it off. I was encountering the exact issue as you. Once i turned off the Dev mode it worked fine and FPS stopped the random dipping.

Using these parameters, it seems RT shadows cost anywhere from 600mb to 1gb of VRAM for me. With RT shadows on, I can pan around for a couple of minutes before the sim became unplayable with stutters etc. I’m running a 5800x3d and 3080ti with 12gb of VRAM. This is with mostly high settings, no air traffic, TLOD of 55(!), and OLOD of 195. So, nothing crazy.

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?
• Yes

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:
• I have RTX 4090 along with 7950x3D. After today’s update I launched the game, and I noticed exactly the same problem that the OP had. I normally don’t have any performance issues with MSFS as my rig is powerful enough.

Then I installed MSFS 2020. I spawned with same aircraft at the same location, guess what, the problem doesn’t exists there. I don’t know why but CPU mem goes well above 35GBs. Something is really wrong on MSFS 2024 side, therefore I uninstalled the game and won’t come back until this is fixed cuz my sim was slide show.

Since the update last night I have noticed that the EGPH (Pyreegue Edinburgh) handcrafted airport was completely tanking my FPS upon landing. I was convinced it was the VRAM bug we speak of in here. But even if I just try spawning in at a gate in a Cessna 152, it immediately makes my frames absymal.
I tested this in many other handcrafted airports and none of them seem to yield the same results. So I’m starting to think the update has broken this airport, or at least something in this airport conflicts with the new update.

I’ll report back soon with more findings. Also tempted to do a complete reinstall on the chance I have some corrupt files

New FrameGen DLL file available. 3.8.1.0

Game is unplayable for me since this update, frame time and hitching everywhere.

I do hope they take it seriously as well, otherwise many people will just either stick with 2020, or find that they can only use 2024 as a GA flying simulator avoiding big cities. I mean the issue happens even with default airports, in default planes.

12GB of VRAM is nowhere near ideal, even though Asobo has told us otherwise.

I lowered all my settings to low or off and I still have horrible stutters on an i7 13700k 64 gb ram RTX 3080 with 12 gb vram. I was able to run the sim prior to the big update , now I can’t even do that.

If certainly appears that the ray traced shadows are causing a bigger hit at handcrafted airports. I wonder if it’s a setting that GAYA left on which causes additional shadow draws on things we don’t need to see.

Further to my previous post. I have now spawned in a Vision Jet at over 30 handcrafted large airports around the world and only JFK and Heathrow really gave me problems where my 8gb 3070 filled up instantly. The rest all performed just fine.

The biggest culprit for poor performance is Pyreegue Edinburgh EGPH. This weirdly doesn’t fill up my VRAM or RAM but for some reason produces an absolute stutter fest of between 10-15 frames. Sometimes it causes my sim to freeze altogether. Keep in mind that prior to this update this airport performed perfectly well.

I have yet to attempt a full reinstall of the sim but I’m wary of doing this now tbh. So, I think I’ll just remove EGPH until the devs update it or another sim update comes from Asobo.
