It was an example the numbers in the example don’t matter.
When i render at 1440p the sim still uses 14GB VRAM with medium settings. That’s what i call special.
My point was that FG uses VRAM from the normal budget and the game doesn’t reserve some VRAM for FG. This also explains why only high end cards have the problem as only those have FG.
the good thing about this is you become an expert in vram management, i find that these are things you have to keep an eye on because they are truly vram hogs
graphic settings:
render resolution
texture resolution
offscreen pre cache
and complex airliners and complex handcrafted airports
you can pretty much squeeze your way around this problem if you avoid all that
Yes i did. And there are even people with a 4090 (24GB) who have problems if you scroll further up in this topic.
VRAM usage is 100% managed by the game since DX12, so there is something wrong with the implementation that causes problems on some system configurations, it seems more often with high end cards. MSFS 2020 with DX11 runs fine and uses about 8 GB max.
Very user specific tbh - there are also many more users with high end GPU’s that are not experiencing this issue. Perhaps you are correct that only “some systems” are affected however it’s extremely difficult to say. This however doesn’t point to an obvious fault in the implementation of DX12 either.
Do you get similar VRAM usage in msfs2020 when switching to DX12 (Albeit beta)
No DX12 in 2020 is fine. Also DX12 in the alpha test weekend was fine.
The game decides how much VRAM to use and which assets it loads and unloads. So an abnormal high VRAM usage problem lies with the sim.
There are many factors that could cause this but hardware is not one of them. Even the OS will not touch the VRAM that is assigned to the software that uses it.
Like Vulkan, DX12 gives full control to the graphics engine of the game.
May have stumbled on to something. In another forum someone suggested trying the new Nvidia app that automatically suggests in-game settings based on your specific hardware. I was not expecting much, but ■■■■, it fixed it!
I think the setting that was tripping me up was using DLAA with DLSS. That will constantly pull it down to 15fps again. But the app found the problem and fixed it.
Worth a try!
I am 100% NOT seeing that. I have seen (and reported above in multiple posts) that I see anywhere from 9 - 15GB of my 16GB card in use at any given time, but have never suffered the “runaway” overloading of VRAM some people have posted. I sim at 1440p (and run a second 1080p monitor vertically as a second screen - 1080 x 1920), with frame generation enabled, and a mix of High and Ultra settings across the board.
Yes, I had noticed in the past that I have to run my machine clean with little else running. Does pay to read little error messages.
BTW, I have that SFO package running on my 3070ti by carefully dialing back a few settings. It is not much worse that an Ultra setting on a runway.
BTW2, I doubt the developers read this, but I believe on many servers, especially those run by MS, you would expect they could get a complete hardware profile of users. In that case they could see the % of people using the various graphics cards and check against the card types how much use they are getting and how much is downloaded. If they have tons of 4070s downloading without complaints I could see how they read this as a local issue for a couple people.
I agree with your items. I used to write this kind of code and the texture resolution has a direct relationship to how much RAM you will use. I have a poor 3070ti and really cannot run TAA. I think if you can run DLSS you can really change the frame rate… it is really upscaling a much simpler image… I hate it because it degrades the button labeling.
Don’t know what your objectives are, but I kinda got some acceptable results. Acceptable, but it need and can be waaay better. TAA is a must have for me, I can’t stand the blurry that DLSS provides. Here are some screenshots that i got with my 3070 in 1440p. I like to fly Airliners, specially in Brazil. Here we have the Fenix, A321neo by Inibuilds and A330-200 by Inibuilds in third party airports for Brazil. Hope you can have some good results too! And anxiously waiting for updates by asobo.

This are not the best, but is acceptable. I refuse to use texture resolution below High. Clouds are in Ultra. Trees, Rocks and Water Waves in HIGH. Displacement Mapping ON.
Are you using TAA or some DLSS setting together with FG?
Intel or AMD CPU?
Do you use G-sync or V-sync?
Do you have integrated graphics card disabled?
Just trying to figure out the difference here.
CPU: 7950X3D
GPU: RTX 4080
64GB RAM
I run 4K monitor but upscaled from 1440P with DLSS. But when i change to TAA i have the same issue.
Second monitor is 1080p and both are running at 120Hz refresh.
I really have to set the texture resolution to medium and turn of FG to prevent this from happening which shouldn’t be an issue for my hardware.
Considering what a fundamental and crippling problem this is for some people (especially those with 8GB VRAM GPU’s that meet the ‘Recommended’ computer spec) I think there’s no possible way they can just brush this aside.
They have to fix it. Otherwise, the sim is a complete failure.
