FPS performance - VRAM bug?

Yep, usually a bit over 15.0gb - and I will see this value if I’m flying in a lower-demand situation, but the second things get heavy it drops to the mid-high 13gb range.

Ok new test. Whenever you get chance, next time you fly, note the available VRAM at the start of the flight along with task manager details on shared memory. Then when it crosses that 11 or 12 gig line, reducing the amount of available VRAM, note the values in task manager again.

My theory is, that VRAM that gets removed from the ‘availability pool’ for want of a better phrase, is getting shifted to allocate some shared memory. Why, I have no idea, back to the tree I go…

Guys can we define a test scenario equal for everyone?
Don’t want to hijack this but we can create a separate post where we put in the results of our tests. Maybe that can be helpful to the devs.

I can create one if you want and before we start testing other users can contribute by adding/removing items.

I and others have suggested that since this topic was created, and every time someone puts one forth, someone else will load in and confirm it, and then someone else will load in and say it’s not occurring for them.

That said, it should be Asobo suggesting detailed test scenarios for those experiencing the problem, and then getting detailed hardware and software logs for every process running on the systems of those affected. There’s no way the average user can know what might trigger these cascading VRAM issues seen by some people.

Ok then, maybe they are working on it and (of course) we don’t even know.

Just loaded into that gate in the 787-10, with the same TLOD and OLOD settings as you. Settings all High except for volumetric clouds on Ultra. I do not see the same results. 1440p, TAA , live weather is currently overcast. I have traffic currently disabled, as I use BATC for ATC and AI traffic injection.

With BATC AI traffic at the airport, VRAM usage goes up, but still not catastrophically:

After stalking this forum since 2024 launch, I’ll throw my 2 cents in. Ever since launch, I have had Ram/VRAM overrun. I usually stress test in the same spot (KJFK, 2020 premium) gate 41 with the A321. My settings are on the high preset with clouds on ultra. RT off. Once I loaded in VRAM would usually sit around ~14-15GB and once I start moving cameras (external) or the aircraft itself, it usually overruns. The highest I have peaked was ~18GB. I do use BATC with FSLTL. I have tried other areas such as KLAX, KMIA, and KORD, and similar results have ensued.

Specs:
Ryzen 7 5800X3D
7800XT
32GB DDR4 3600Mhz
1TB NVME (MSFS)
Windows 11 24H2
Playing on 1440p
MSFS on Steam up to date

However, in the past week, I have noticed that my GPU TBP is not being utilized to its fullest. The max is 260W but once loading in sits around 100-160W. Utilization goes to 100%, VRAM becomes bogged, and latency increases to 100ms+. FPS sits in the single digits. Overclocking or underclocking makes no difference. And before anyone ask its not an issue with my hardware or power settings. Voltages are constant and all power settings are set to high performance (no power saving). This is the only program that has this throttling issue.

It’s interesting that this change has happened in the last week. On FS 2020 (DX 12 beta), I have no issues running mostly ultra settings with good performance, 40-50 FPS in the same areas.

I would love to have the result you’ve got ! I guess with my 3060 ti, the 8 Gb of vram memory is not enough… thanks for your reply ! But I really hope big airports will be optimised to use less Vram…

Yep, HWINFO should show that the card is perfcapped, therefore that wattage/power has nowhere to go, so it gets cut down. I noticed the exact same thing with my old 3070.

I’d definitely suggest you lower TLOD to 100 and OLOD to 100 on the ground, and reduce Terrain Precaching to Medium, if you haven’t already. VRAM usage in this sim is not optimized, even without the bug that’s grabbing too much to begin with!

Finally being able to capture a clip showing this absolute mess. Just climbed out of Dublin in the a320v2 All default scenery is below me. FPS was in the 10s on take-off and climb. Then suddenly jumps to 60! (I have sim FPS limited to 60) and when I turned it off it went to 98. I was still flying over the city at a pretty low altitude. Settings are high end. This mess needs to be solved ASAP. I have not been able to do one successful flight because of it. I’m only running at 1080p. I have a RTX 3070Ti and 32GB of DDR5 RAM and a Ryzen 7800x3D. That should be enough for what I’m trying to do

I have RTX 3070, TLOD at 50, OLOD at 50, texture res at medium and I still run out of VRAM and dip below 10 FPS when landing.

Hey all, I think this issue is related to the latest Nvidia WHQL driver 566.36. I manually rolled back to WHQL 566.14 and issue seems to be gone.

Hmmm 566.36 was released on 5th of december, right?
But the issue exists since release of msfs 2024 in november.

Can you please post your system specs with monitor resolution?

So… very intresting…

I was having issues with the VRAM going past the limit and causing a major drop in FPS, I found that lowering the texture resolution from ultra to high and turning the RT Shadows off has helped me massively. With frame gen switched on it was very bad for ghosting and stuttering when looking around as vram would just keep increasing and almost never recover. Now however my vram runs between 10-14GB at most when flying over areas such as London/New York etc with frame gen on I get around 100fps with no stuttering, ghosting etc. For anyone that might be having this issue it might be worth trying to turn the RT shadows off and see if this helps any. Also using auto FPS has helped with reducing vram as it adjusts the TLOD to suit fps therefore reducing when you’re on the ground to reduce the load therefore reduce vram.

My specs are

Ryzen 7 7800X3D
RX 7800 XT
64GB DDR5 Ram set at 6000mhz
Running at 1440P.

Nah bro. Nuttin to do with that ■■■■.

Also that’s with the 20gb VRAM threshold crossed on 1440p - yowza.

EDIT: Oh and this is interesting - when I drop a few settings to try and restore some sanity, VRAM usage goes down but it also seems to continue to use shared memory instead of using all VRAM first.

As a test try the same flight with medium settings and let us know the difference.

I couldn’t zoom in to your clip so don’t know your VRAM consumption.

FS24 can push most GPUs beyond a sensible limit. VRAM fills up 100%, giving stutters, freezes and a sudden stall.

VRAM at 90% can be stable.

How did you get such high FPS? You have Frame gen enabled? 80-90FPS in LFPG is nuts.

I see similar results at LFPG Gate F14 @ 1440p TAA,mostly ULTRA except Texture Resolution = HIGH, Raytraced Shadows = OFF
