Frame Rate Miracle! (?)

When I first open the vfr map completely and then resize it (via the “minimalise” button!) and move the map after this almost out of sight) I experience miraculously better frame rates. Couldn’t believe it yesterday when I saw it for the first time but today I have the same experience: LSZH (FSDT), high-end setting profile, 4k (3840x2160) and high level cloud weather from 25 fps to 44 !!. Same experience also on other flights. Other (more fps consuming) weather conditions hardly affect fps anymore. As soon as I close vfr map completely, fps drops again with app 40%. I really have no idea what caused it, but maybe more people could benefit from this experience. Have GTX 2070 and i7-9700.
I hope this experience works for a lot of simmers….

I’m pretty sure this is a red herring; FPS counters see the VFR map as removed and bump FPS but ingame there is no difference. Did you notice any more smoothness visually ingame?

I won t bother you guys (and girls….) when there was not also a far better smoothness. I am a simmer for 20 years plus and as you know 20 to 25fps is almost “minimum” to fly. The “extra” fps" I gain with this “tric” makes it just a smooth experience, at least for me.
It is definitly noticable…

This is a visual glitch, and you’re not actually increasing frames. This is your computer counting the frames twice: once on the game window, and once again on the VFR map window.

This is a glitch already known for decades. Sorry to break your illusions lol  I wish that were true though.

Although I am interested in the technical aspects…the “double counting” of fps sounds reasonable…but …why is the smoothness so much better? I see what I see…

Make the FPs counter in the developer mod that counts correctly!

Probably placebo effect but who knows

hahah…everybody is right…to check I made a flight in dev mode and no fps gain there indeed. I used the Nvidia fps (double- :grinning:) counter before.
But…I am right too: there is still a remarkable uptake in smoothness.

i “increase” fps with open PFD and MFD windowed

Yeah, dev mode is the only way to tell for sure. Any other tool will report an incorrect number if you break out the windows. In my case, I actually get a 5fps drop for every window I break out.

You can easily test that ‘perceived smoothness’. Rather than fps, check what your frame times are with and without the map broken out and compare the 2.

@pilotakaa

I agree with your smoothness perception.

Have you taken a reading of the GPU utilization with and without your methodology? There seems to be a noticeable difference, for me at least, which may explain the smoothness perception.

Question for the technical experts here:

Does the GPU utilization reflect the combined usage from all monitors or just the main display activity?

For the technicians among us; my comparison between the 2 “modes”.
In my opinion there is no “evidence” in here for better fps (or ms…), on the contrary  :disappointed:

But the smoothness is still indisputable.
Especially in areas where the fps without the vfr map “open” drops to 20/25 fps (and the stuttering begins)

And it is not a “glitch” effect; the smoothness stays for the rest of flight (or untill closing the window).
I tried the suggestion with other windows (mfd, pfd) and at least for the figures this gives the same effect indeed: did not tried the effect on smoothness with these windows open “in flight”
