I’ve finally migrated from FSX to MSFS 2020. I’ve been using FSX with 3 monitors for 15 years or more. Frame rates on my current computer setup was 35-40.
Same hardware for msfs, but frame rates are around 15 for 3 monitors (using the Experimental/Windows). If I close two of them, rates only go up to about 25.
Is this all I can expect with my hardware?
Dell G7 laptop
I7 core @ 2.60GHz
16GB RAM
64 bit OS
NVIDIA RTX 2060, running monitors at 1920x1080
Saitek yoke and two throttle quadrants
DIY control panel with switches and two axes
That’s actually more than I would expect. It’s a laptop + the hardware is pretty old and it’s a lower segment GPU. Although you didn’t provide the model of the CPU but I’m guessing it’s around 8th gen.
If you bought a top of the line gaming PC (not laptop) right now it would be roughly 3-4x faster.
Not sure what you expected but it’s a more less 15 years newer game and the graphics, weather, physics etc. are significantly better but also much more demanding.
It runs better than FSX on the hardware from the period it was first released
The FPS you’re getting sounds about right, however you might be able to optimise your settings to get more out of the sim.
This guide is a very in-depth explanation about how each setting affects performance, by how much, and whether they affect CPU or GPU load.
If you go through it while using MSFS’ inbuilt Dev-mode FPS counter, you’ll be able to see whether you’re mainthread (CPU) or GPU limited, and whether you can even turn some settings up as well as down and get better overall performance!
Hey guys, I have a quick question. I’m running at around 20-35 fps on Microsoft flight simulator, with 33% gpu usage and around 35%cpu usage. Im using a Gigabyte RTX 3080ti paired with an i7-11700kf and 32 gb of ram. What can be a possible cause and fix for this problem.
I’d recommend using the inbuilt Dev-mode FPS counter to get more information about what’s limiting you. You can be at 35% CPU usage, but still be limited by your CPU’s mainthread.
When I open the NVIDIA performance monitor its says the GPU is at 99%. I guess I was just wondering if there is anything I can tweak to make it faster. I’ll work thru the link to see if it gets any better.
I think a new PC is in my future. Thanks for the comments.
