Freezing issues during flight

Hello all
This is my first post.

Recently in the last month or so I am experiencing where the flight simulator freezes for a second or two, at least every minute or every other minute. It’s quite frustrating as it is ruining the sim play. I have had MSFS 2020 since September 2020 and I’ve had no issues up to this point.

I have tried starting flights from US, Caribbean, Asian and European airports at random and I am getting the same issue. I have tried the following:

  • Uninstalled and reinstalled the application - MSFS 2020
  • Updated graphics driver and set the MSFS 2020 graphics setting to the optimisation setting as indicated by my graphics application
  • Set MSFS to minimum graphics setting.
  • Set data in the MSFS 2020 settings to “Off”
  • Ran a memory check on my PC to check for memory errors.

Nothing has worked. I do not have any Bluetooth device connections which I’ve seen on other discussions as a cause for this issue. I am not very versed in the technical side of PCs so and advice to further troubleshoot this issue would be appreciated. My PC Specs are as follows:
AMD Ryzen 5 3600X 6-Core 3.8 GHz
16GB RAM
256 GB SSD (which MSFS 2020 is installed on)
1TB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti

A freeze such as the one you describe - where the screen freezes but the sound continues - is usually indicative of a MS Server being pounded by us all out here all simming and your sim is not getting scenery data as quickly as it needs to draw Autogen in time, according to your LOD settings.
Don’t stampede towards a windows re-install - that won’t fix it - it’s not your rig - it’s Server side.
Do what I do - take a moment to have a breather. . .it will all get fixed in the future I’m sure, in this particular instance MS will increase server bandwidth availability.

What you can try is set a maximum to your FPS via the Nvidia Control panel > Manage 3D settings > click on Program settings tab > wait for field 1 to be filled … > in box 1, find Microsoft flight simulator… and select it > in box 2 find , Max Frame Rate , set this FPS a bit lower as your max fps in MSFS… my dad has a 1060 and have set his Max FPS = 20 …

Sorry - but that’s nonsense. Absolute nonsense with regard to the OP’s problem.

Thanks. Will try and report the result.

I noticed after opening the VFR Map and moving it to a location on the screen the sim froze for about 45 secs. This has happened twice now.

Connecting my x-box controller will sometimes trigger these pauses, yesterday I also noticed the same by turning the trim wheel on my Saitek multipanel. There are some rough edges that still need to be polished.

Update!!
Hi All, after hours of troubleshooting and taking some ideas from the posts you have contributed it seems I’ve solved the problem.
Combining the following tasks:

  1. Reducing the frame rate (Thanks SteveOhhNo)
  2. Turning off my VPN (Thanks wazitdoinnow for the direction on the server data)

The freezing which has plagued me for several weeks is now solved.

Thanks again to all the contributors for giving me the suggestions which allowed me to explore the other options I had not tried prior to posting this thread for help.

Cheers.
