FS2024 Graphics Settings and Performance Guide (11/20/2024)

Have things improved at all with DLSS 3.5 and newer? I remember feeling very unimpressed when DLSS 3 was revealed, especially with the UI garbling, but I haven’t kept up with more recent FG developments.

Oh forgot to ask, what resolution do you run in?
Running in 3840x2160 is definitely going to contribute to a degradation in performance for me.

Incredible job. They should give you an internship!

I’m still rocking an AMD 5900x and rx6800xt, this was super helpful! Thanks!

Hey @TheOriginalBabu, fantastic guide as always!

I’d like to make a suggestion for when you inevitably refresh this guide: for Shadow Maps please consider also testing them with Raytraced Shadows disabled, a good proportion of people probably won’t be using Raytraced, so it would be good to know what the actual cost of the Shadow Map settings are

Also doing the config edit and benchmarking at least 4k shadows would be very interesting: what is the performance impact of Raytraced Shadows vs 4k Shadow Maps!

The 4k Shadow Map config edit is very popular on 2020, and on 2024 it might represent a good balance for people who can’t afford Raytraced but would like an improvement on the 2k.

Cheers!

I believe the game still uses shadowmaps even while keeping raytracing shadows enabled - i.e. enabling raytracing shadows does not remove shadowmaps but instead uses a hybrid of both raster and raytracing. I’ll double check when I update this in a few months though.

The thought of testing without RT didn’t really cross my mind because the performance impact seemed so minimal for the quality boost, but I definitely will look into it.

Ideally Asobo would have just added 4k shadows as an option in the game considerng how many people mod it in,

Absolutely. Quite a few people even mod 6k and 8k in too, with how commonplace 4k shadows in gaming is these days you’d have hoped there would be a default option for it.

I really thank the OP for this thread but it does not work for me. I use mostly the same settings in both 2020 and 2024 (which are based on this thread and even decreasing some of the settings) and, while in 2020 I get around 60fps, in 2024 I only reach 30 while at cruise level. When lower, 15 and not constant. Hereis my build:

  • Intel Core i9-10900K 3.7 GHz 10-Core
  • Asus ROG STRIX Z490-E GAMING ATX LGA1200
  • G.Skill Trident Z Neo 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16
  • ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 3.0 X4 NVME SSD
  • Gigabyte GAMING OC GeForce RTX 3080 10GB
  • be quiet! Pure Base 500DX ATX Mid Tower Case
  • Corsair RM850 (2019) 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

I will stick with 2020 until I upgrade my build then…

because of vram bug

  • use textures on low to try to stop bug from taking effect
  • use anisotropic filtering / texture supersampling as low as possible to mitigate effects of bug (those are memory bandwidth sensitive settings)

My system is pretty much identical - CPU, chipset, RAM, 3080. I get very consistent 30fps running in 4K even in very complex scenery, I’m using the High-end settings and DLSS Performance, with the automated frame rate set to 35. I used TAA at 30FPS for a while, but it tended to slow down in busy areas and I occasionally hit the VRAM bug. I have never managed to get the sim to even run with Ultra settings which I presume is because of a lack of VRAM (it drops to something like 1fps then locks up or crashes). For me 2024 now has more consistent performance than 2020, but I did run 2020 in Ultra using TAA. Whilst I’m happy ish with my current setup and performance, I’m contemplating upgrading to a 5080 in the hope I would be able to experience Ultra settings, but I’m probably going to wait until the VRAM bug is fixed and I can see a decent review of 2024 on a 5 series card.

Thank you.
God bless you.

I don’t know if it’s just my internet connection, but Terrain LOD also affect how sharp texture appear close up.

Here is 250.

Here is 100.

It is very weird.

AFAIK TLOD has always had an impact on ground texture resolution. Sort of makes sense that it is part of Terrain Level of Detail right?

Ok my bad. I thought it was just affecting draw distance or something like that.

It’s strange that draw distance and details are in the same settings while I think it would be great to be able to choose medium draw distance with ultra level of detail. So it can generate less, but in better quality.

I think there’s a Wishlist topic about that somewhere.

On MSFS 2020 I believe you had to set at least 200 TLoD to get the maximum texture resolution.

Thank you. I found it : Separate terrain level of detail / draw distance sliders - Official Microsoft Flight Simulator / Wishlist - Microsoft Flight Simulator Forums

That is not a close-up though, the camera is at a higher altitude, which also factors into the LOD system. At ground level, you should be seeing the full-resolution textures right below your position even at extremely low Terrain LOD settings. What you’re demonstrating in your screenshots is normal and has always been that way.

You can find more information in the following thread: LOD Problems - Distances revisited Do note that the listed LOD distance values no longer apply because they were taken close to the launch of FS2020. They were increased with one of the SU5 hotfixes.

I’m really glad I found this guide - I’m building my first PC for flight sim with a GPU to arrive next week. Trying to understand how to approach the graphics settings is a bit intimidating.

I wish MSFS would provide information like this thread. Would have saved their users a lot of frustration. So glad I found this. Thanks all.

I wish Asobo would add TAA customization settings like SCS in Euro Truck Simulator 2.
