FSR 4 Support in SU 6?

At this point I’m pretty sure it’s on AMD to update the drivers to address the FG upgrade instability. It seemed it was the recent driver update that seemed to stabilize the upscale upgrade. It fixed that problem that I was having in other games as well (like BF6).

No new sim beta release notes have mentioned anything about FSR since the first release. Also they have tagged this thread as ‘feedback logged’, not ‘bug logged’. Would not surprise me if Asobo has told AMD: we are using your SDK and it has some bugs, here’s the data. I would be even more not surprised if AMD uses this as another feather in their cap on the next driver release to proclaim MSFS is now FSR Redstone enabled. Nvidia did it with DLSS 4.

On my PC, it feels a bit smoother than before (FSR 4.1 Native AA + FG 4.0)… less stuttering and shimmering… But maybe that’s due to MSFS version 1.8.11… rather than FSR itself?

Lower performance on the 7000 series gpu’s is to be expected as they don’t have the hardware required to optimize performance like the 9000 series gpu’s.

So my question then is why would they offer this option to 7000 series GPUs? If it looks worse and performs worse, who is picking it? :sweat_smile:

At least when looking at glass cockpit displays, it looks significantly worse. I haven’t taken a deep pixel-peep at the rest because the glass cockpit piece is bad enough to be unusable, especially with a noticable performance decrease.

Would you mind telling me which aircraft and posting a screenshot of the bad cockpit display you are referring to. I have the RX9070XT and would like to compare what you’re seeing and I’ll post what I’m seeing. Also do you have both Upscaling and FG enabled. I’m just curious to see what the difference is.

You can disregard all the parts of that post that talk about secondary scaling nonsense - but included is my sim performance with and without FSR upscaling and an example of the blurry displays on (what I think was) a G1000.

I think the difference comes down to being on a 7000 series GPU, but my point is that if it’s going to look worse and perform worse on 7000 series cards, why offer it to us?

Not seeing anything like that on the 9070XT.

Looks not to be an Sim issue but more with the AMD drivers. I guess they haven’t worked out all of the bugs for the 7000 series. Hopefully with a later driver update they’ll resolve it.

26.7.1 appears to have addressed many 7000 series issues but they might not have gotten to all of them. May require Asobo to reach out to them about the issue or users reporting it.

So I did some testing with my primary sim rig which has a 9950x3d paired with a 7900xtx. My monitor is a Samsung 55" S90D 4k HDR Oled. I turned on the FSR upscaler upgrade in the Adrenalin driver (v26.7.1) which allowed the sim to utilize the latest FSR 4.1.1 driver. I then compared FSR 4.1.1 native with TAA using a Cessna 172:

Just doing a quick comparison, I can see no difference in the glass displays - definitely no ghosting with FSR 4.1.1 as your pictures showed. A more detailed inspection will probably show some differences however that becomes much more subjective. Note the Adrenalin dashboard is at the top of each pic which will show the fps to be about 10fps less on FSR 4.1.1 native vs TAA. However, in the FSR 4.1.1 native pic, the plane is much lower and directly above KDFW airport so that will account for at least half of the 10fps difference between the two. I then did some more comparisons:

FSR 4.1.1 quality mode (67% 4k resolution)

FSR 4.1.1 performance mode (50% 4k resolution)

A quick comparison of TAA with performance mode you can definitely see a small difference however comparing TAA with quality mode the differences are not so obvious.

From the pics above I’ve listed some performance details:

Note: for all pics, I had vsync turned on in the sim at 1/2 monitor refresh rate (144Hz) for a capped fps of 72. Given the pics and the performance details above it appears to me that the FSR v4.1.1 technology is working as designed on the sim.

I think we may now be a couple of beta releases beyond when you reported your issue with ghosting on the glass displays and probably even a release or two of a newer Adrenalin driver. Are you still seeing this issue with the latest releases?

There is definitely a difference between TAA and FSR 4.1 Native AA. When I fly in the JMB Aviation I notice it around the back button on the main display it’s white text on a black background I use the Galaxy XR in VR and it’s very noticeable when running at those resolutions. However, I agree with you at 4k on a 2D screen Quality and Native look indistinguishable. I use a Samsung Odyssey 43 inch Neo 4k mini led and I cannot see a difference between those modes in the same aircraft.

Im not sure whats going on but when i try TAA it seems like buildings and edges have much more shimmering compared to su5, fsr 4.1 Native eliminates alot of it but seems over sharpened regardless of what tweaks i do. Performance seems much better than previous.

FSR 4 is very welcome ! I am excited for release.

Sadly DLSS and AMD FrameGen gives massive ghosting at night…

I’ll lead with the fact that I haven’t (and, honestly, won’t unless there’s a significant issue) paid much attention to GPU usage/temps - I’m generally letting the base FPS guide me as to whether performance is better/worse.

That said, I’m on MSFS 2024 SU6 beta 1.8.11.0 and AMD Adrenalin 26.7.1 using an AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE and this is what I get with AMD FSR 4.1 Native AA vs TAA at 100% render scaling:

In the glass cockpit instrument blur test I was rapidly spinning the baro knob to artificially change the altimeter value quickly. This might not be a gamechanger for some, especially if you’re flying GA where these values won’t typically be spinning too quickly - but get into faster jets with high climb rates or anything with a HUD basically and it becomes (in my opinion) too much to bear. This is especially true when considering that AMD FSR 4.1 comes with a performance decrease.

At least in my testing, I fail to see any advantage to using AMD FSR 4.1 upscaling over TAA, personally.

I don’t think you’re the first user in this thread to show that the issue may be less prevelant (if existing at all) on 4K resolution displays - it may simply be an issue on anything sub-4K, including my 3440x1440 display.

Interesting… I admit I tend to switch between the two modes depending on the situation. Sometimes I find Native AA slightly sharper and better-looking, but at other times—in different environments—I notice a bit of shimmering on certain textures, so I switch back to TAA. I think the quality of the screen (the panel and the electronics) also plays a role in how things are perceived. Mine isn’t as good as I’d like.

As for the performance difference, I don’t really notice it, but I’ve figured out why: since I’ve capped my frame rate, the impact gets absorbed and becomes imperceptible.

I’m going to go against the grain (and my own past experience) and say that FSR 4.1 NativeAA is quite good even with fast-moving numbers on glass displays. I have a 9070 XT, 1440p. Yes, it hits display quality, and there’s still smearing (and anyone who says otherwise has vision issues), but after using it for a week, I’m probably going to stick with it.

You’re right in your closing statement. Upscalers work best on 4K because they just have more pixels to address artifacting/ghosting at 4k. So it can look fine at 4k, but at 1440p some things get blurry. It kinda goes back to the first releases of upscalers, DLSS and FSR were pretty much useless for any resolution other than 4k, and over the years they have gotten much better and usable for lower resolutions. And will continue to improve, thankfully.

My performance is capped at 50 native FPS (doubled by FSR 3.1 FG) and I’d prefer not to go too much lower - though it seems if I were to cap at 30 or maybe even 40, that would be the case for me as well.

By any chance have you turned off frame gen to see if it improves the blurring of the altimeter? Also, the SU6 beta is using Frame gen v4.0 which is an improvement over v3.1.
