FYI QUEST 3 connected with a USB-ethernet 2.5GB Adapter that has PD insert > Massive performance increase

Quest 3 is android, so instead of WiFi, if one inserts a USB-ethernet adapter (I do have 2.5GB ethernet on motherboard) to the Quest 3 and plug this into a/your router (2.5GB router or switch) you get a massive stable and fast connection.

Not quite 500 Mbps bandwidth in Virtual Desktop VDXR, because this chokes the Quest 3 internal processor (you get 1 second freezes when the cache is overran),
I run 410 Mbps bandwidth VDXR which is a massive rock solid improvement.

Mind you, Virtual Desktop is designed to run WiFi whether you connect a USB cable or not (!!).

I’m not sure a 100MB network will work, not tested
Have WIFI switched OFF when booting your Quest 3 and Virtual Desktop will switch to the Eth0 cable.

My VDXR is set to Godlike, VR frame rate 90fps, VR Bitrate 410Mbps, SSW Enabled, RTX 4090, AMD 9800X3D, that before ALWAYS showed – micro - stutters

I still use SSW in VDXR, because that gives a solid steady 90fps in simrace Assetto Corsa EVO and in most games, and 70fps rock solid in MSFS 2024 VR

USB-network adapter I use:
StarTech 2.5GbE USB-C to Ethernet Adapter, 100W PD Pass-Through, NBASE-T (that uses the RIGHT CHIP) € 42

My Flint 2 internet router has 2x 2.5GB WAN/LAN ports, so right now I use that,

but I ordered a
TP-Link TL-SG105-M2 5×2.5 Gigabit Ports Ethernet LAN Switch from amazon € 40
that can be hooked up behind any internet router LAN port.

Also add a proper 5 meter CAT 6A LAN cable € 15 or more and at least a 25W or more PD USB charger – I use 65W PD € 15, and a USB PD (!) charger cable, mine a 240W 5 meter for only € 12 amazon.nl (very cheap with reviews)

Check all the above in f.i. Gemini AI, the AI explained all the details of why this works (you ask beyond hallucinations!)

Caveat: Virtual Desktop and META consider this an android Hack and do not support this …… (YMMV)

I used thermal tape to attach a NVME cooling plate/heat sink (from a motherboard) to the StarTech 2.5GbE, keeps cool now .. running VDXR 360 Mbps bandwidth H.264+

Are you seeing this performance increase only with the SU6 beta, or was this functionality also seen in SU5?

This is about optimizing the Quest 3, bypassing Virtual Desktop App Wifi stream to a Ethernet cable connection.

just tried this and performance is WAY improved. Mainly through smoothness. Rock solid 72FPS and no drops or stutters whatsoever. First time I have truly enjoyed using the Q3 in the sim. I had a dedicated WiFi-6 router before but setup was just too fiddly every time I wanted to use the sim. This is much easier and better.

Caveat: with more trial and error I found out Quest 3 can only handle a max input bandwidth of about 400-450 Mbps and parallel the 2.5GB eth0 chipset ditto - runs hot - , so in sim racing with massive data pumping in corners etc, codec H.264+ should not be set at the maximum 500 Mbps, or the USB adapter or the Quest start throttling and stutter/1 sec freeze still again, this prob the same when your MSFS settings are ultra high at a big airport. Use AV1 HEVC codecs etcetera maximum 200 Mbps, or top 410 Mbps. – YMMV …

A 1GB version of this setup works as well and even with somewhat less hassle because 1GB eth0 chip does not run that hot, 1GB can also handle the - 410 Mbps limit - bandwidth.

Great advice. I have not seen the throttling or stuttering myself. Perhaps the 9070XT can’t jam enough pixels down the wire to saturate it. I am running a lower resolution and foveated rendering.

Still looks great and makes the PMDG 77W at a 3P airport with traffic on usable (55FPS) :tada:
