Game is unplayable in VR and a huge downgrade to MSFS 2020

Specs: i9-10900k, RTX 3080, 32 GB of DDR4 RAM, game installed on NVME SSD, Gigabit connection. VR headset: Quest 3, streaming via Virtual Desktop, VDXR, H.264

Whenever I try to swap to VR the game crashes and gives me DXGI error (Device hung).

I tried: rolling back the driver, underclocking my GPU’s clock and memory, various graphics settings, etc. Basically everything that was suggested in the MSFS 2020 DXGI error thread, but nothing helps.

The only thing that works somewhat is setting DLSS to performance and then the entire image turns to ■■■■.

Since this game supposedly runs better than MSFS 2020 and I can play that just fine in VR I am stunned as to why I can literally not play this game in VR at all.

If anybody has any ideas for a fix let me know. Maybe it’s not a me issue but a bug? Thanks for any help.

It’s a bug but nobody wants to admit it. Especially the developers. There appears to be no plans to fix it. Right now MSFS 2024 is completely unplayable in VR. It just crashes if you’re trying to fly anywhere that has any real textures. (I have the same hardware as you except for the HP Reverb G2).

Same issue here. Compared side by side by 2020z irs half the frames and washy colour.

And when I switch VR Graphic mode is crashes with this:

with respect MSFS2024 is fully playable in VR for many, including myself, indeed its even better than 2020.

Obviously you are having problems and i dont mean to take away from that very real issue.

But its not an issue thats affecting us all.

It probably doesnt help but in my case i found performance is best with my Quest 3 using Virtual Desktop as the Meta app brings with it ASW style artifacts.

Hope you manage to get your VR up and running soon!

Good for you mate, but an issue is still an issue, like you said.

The guy is using a G2 so idk why you are even commeting about VD since he cant even use that since the G2 is a wired only headset.

And for me, I am using VD and it is still ■■■■■■■■ itself. Idk what the point of you comment even is to begin with. They should fix this issue regardless of how many people are affected.

I comment because its not a universal issue, thats all. Many of us are flying in VR and its fine, so whilst unfortunate to imply that the game is unplayable isnt correct.

So, VR was defaulting to super high res, which was unplayable ( not CTD, but sub 1 FPS )

Setting render scaling down to 50-55 set just under native res for my headset, and I get an acceptable FPS and it’s useable. It does seem to get worse after starting / stopping several flights, but I’m also having consistent issues with VIVE Console ( terrible perf )

IDK if this is your issues, but def dig through the settings in VR ( graphic options are kinda hidden )

Going to have to disagree with OP here.

Using Quest 3 with wired Link - VR works very good for me.

Runs better than 2020 did with equal-to settings and looks bit better too. Display’s little blurrier but I need to tweak settings. Most things set high with some things (trees, grass, traffic etc) turned down to medium or low.

Not stellar specs - 3080 with 10 gig video ram. 32 gig system ram.

I would get OP to ensure not running any wonky VR utilities that maybe causing issues with latest drivers.

IDK if this helps you - but in 2020, sometimes if I turned on VR after the game was running ( ie turn on the headset and load drivers while in game ) it would run at a different resolution and throw off render scale settings.

For 2024 - render scale is the first change I’d look at making… mine defaulted to higher than native res for my headset, so it was killing the FPS. Render scale of 50-55, appears to give me close to what the headset should be running at, and I’m getting decent perf ( not trying complex a/c or busy airports ) You can see the resolution after you change the render scale - I’d match or go a bit lower than your headsets per-eye resolution.

Then go through the VR graphics settings, which are more or less hidden on the 2nd VR menu in settings

Ill give that a shot, thanks!

Respectfully you’re wrong. Opinions aside, 2024 is objectively far worse in VR than 2020.

Yeah I can’t get the same smoothness in 2024 that I can in 2020. And this is with bringing my settings down to make 2024 look even worse than 2020.

Still trying to tweak things to make it better but also wondering if they will have an update to improve it soon.

Objectively, you are wrong.

First thing I’d suggest for users having issues is ensuring one isn’t using OpenXR toolkit, or any other VR tools.

It’s already solved the issue for some involved.

If those having issues are more interested in insulting others and spreading false hyperboles, then I don’t know what to tell you all.

if you have the Virtual Desktop app, try running through that rather than the Meta app, its a much smoother experience for me.

Not for me, for me its an improvement.

Using the Meta app with my Q3 was ok but via virtual desktop its much much nicer. I recommend it is you are using a Meta headset.

Obviously, some are having issues but I think its too soon to say 2024 is “objectively” worse than 2020 as some are having a good, if buggy time.

I don’t have a WiFi set up quite up to snuff for VR - and latest versions of Virtual Desktop don’t support wired connections.

If I still want to continue to use OpenXR for FS2020, but disable for FS2024, is that possible and if so, what would i need to do please?

Would it be to choose an option other than VDXR in virtual desktop settings?
