Hello Everyone,
Just wanted to let everyone know a fix to the Garmin 1000 sticking problem for some aircraft. I’ve found that in the simulator Garmin will freeze sporadically, (especially when going on approach). This can also lead to the game quitting back to desktop. For me, this consistently happens on the Cessna Grand Caravan, but other aircraft as well. I found a quick way to unfreeze the GPS. Hit the FPL button and it will unfreeze. I’ve troubleshooted this for like 4 days straight because it annoyed me, and that seems to be the only way right now to unfreeze the GPS. It seems if it sticks once, it won’t stick again after hitting the FPL button. Not sure why this is happening, but it is and resolves a ton of frustration. Also not sure if this is a “known issue” either. But trust me after a 3 hour flight and your instruments go bezerk, you’re not happy.

My way was to descend the FL. Then it starts to work again. But you’re totaly right. It sucks when you are flying a few hours and this happens. Thanks for your hint. I’m still not shure if this is a bug or also happens in real flights when you not turn on the Pitot heating…

I thought it was also the heating problem too, but I tested that a lot in my 4 days of trying to figure it out. I couldn’t get any real result with testing that. So, idk really but idts. The FL thing is interesting. Mine freezes whether it is on FL or not. I also thought it was route based at first because it was freezing at the same spot when I would did multiple short flights from KPIT to KLBE, but turns out was all over the place on many routes.
It’s most definitely not a pitot heat issue. This is a very real bug. I’ve also tried to troubleshoot it, but just can’t seem to find what triggers it other than it usually happens on approach when you’ve been in the air for a while.
I will most definitely try hitting the FPL button next time it happens to see if that helps.

Yea try it and let me know. If you would try it on another aircraft vs the grand caravan that would be great. I am learning to fly that particular plane IRL (for southern airways express), so flying it in the simulator is what I mostly do :). Either way, I am curious if that fix works on other aircraft. It just did it to me again about 20 minutes ago, and the FPL button did work again.
Have you tried the G1000 Working Title Mod? It might help.
I’ve had it happen on multiple planes - the 172, Caravan, TBM, VL-3 and likely others as well. I tend to plane hop a lot, although those seem to be the ones I fly most outside of the Carenado planes, which don’t seem to be affected since they have the old GNS system vs the G1000/3000.
I use all the Working Title Gamin mods. With or without them makes no difference. This happens regardless. I’ve tried.

Holy cow, thanks for this. Was nearing the end of my flight and the garmin locked up with ATC telling me to climb to 5000. Couldn’t do it as nothing was responding. Hit FPL and everything started working like magic! Thanks for saving my flight.
No worries! I use the FPL button quite often, so now I use it even more haha. Glad it helped
The other fix that has proven to work every time is to bring up one of the windows (like ATC) and pop it out, resize it a little, and pop it back in.
