The great circle route, on the other hand, would follow a circular path on the surface of the earth that is perpendicular to the earth’s axis and would have a distance of approximately 8,800 kilometers. This means that the great circle route would be approximately 1,200 kilometers shorter than the direct route between the two points.

I’m not in a position to doubt your maths, but there appears to be something wrong in the application of it.
