Right now I am getting decent VR performance with OXR70% and TAA70%, Terrain LOD at 100, most other settings set to medium, and really enjoying VR. However I really want to use the full resolution and clarity of the G2.
After watching “VR Flight Sim Guy” and “The VR Pilot” reviews on YouTube, they are both saying the experience with the RTX 3090 with the G2 is amazing.
Does the RTX3090 allow us to unlock both the G2’s and MSFS full potential in VR, or do we need to wait for the next generation of GPU’s to get to that point?
For me personally spending $2k on GPU would be worth it if I can run the G2 at native resolution, run in-game settings at high or ultra and still get 30+ FPS.
Current spec:
Ryzen 5 5600x
32GB DDR4-3600 RAM
RTX 2070 Super
HP Reverb G2
2070S to 3080 user here. Try setting the Visuals up higher. You’ll get the potential clarity without the smoothness but at least you can see what is possible with the 3090 clarity wise
It’s a difficult one. How can I recommend something that costs almost 3 times the price of a 3080 with only 15% extra performance? You could always order one to try and return if you don’t think it’s worth it. It is a pretty penny for a small visual jump. You can get a very satisfying experience with a lot of games with your 2070S but I completely understand the pull of a new graphics card
I went from 2070s to 3090fe and glad I did. This sim runs a lot better, I’m running about 2000x 2000, with mostly high settings, getting 45-50 in the air and around 30-35 low and on the ground.
Automobilista 2 is heaven btw, running at 90 fps in all weathers with a full grid.
I thought I’d have buyers remorse but surprisingly I don’t, as 3080s are approaching the 1000 mark and are rarer than hen’s teeth.
The 3090 is a beast but it runs so quiet and cool.
If you can afford it go for it, as waiting for next gen is just never ending.
A few people including VR Flight Sim Guy are recommending the 3090 because its got loads more VRAM but all that extra VRAM is only useful if its actually used and you need to pair it with a really good CPU to get the most out of it. I’ve got a RTX 3080 and the VRAM is really underused because I’m running it with an i7 7700, which is an older processor.
I would have thought your Ryzen 5 5600 would be better paired with an RTX 3080, 3070 or 3060ti.
I start to have my doubts on VR Flight Sim Guy’s expertise, I get the “overhyped” feeling in the latest videos, just like other youtubers. I have the 3080 and 5900x, I manage to get around 30fps (going up and down), but my feeling is, you better wait for Asobo and Nvidia to optimize their software, feels to me like a lot of potential is lost somewhere, and by then we might have something like a 3080ti as well.
I think I found my best setting yesterday with great clearity and mostly over 30fps with reprojection on, and most stuff on high or even some on ultra (cockpit, volumetric cloud, water, reflections). While I went down with the resolutions (OXR 65%, TAA 80%, LOD 100%) I went up with AF (8x), Texture Super Sampling (6x6) and Texture Synthesis (High), and the picture looked to me almost as crisp and sharp like the 100%, and like 95% with the blue reprojection window (when I turn my head for a second it goes down, but overall smooth and sharp).
So I recommend, try to get the sharpness not primarly by the resolution settings only.
i have an 3900x and a 3090 oc and i am running oxr 90 and TAA 100 with high medium settings on 30 fps and 26-28 on heavy airport. I will appreciate anybody with similar specs shere the settings with me.
I think there’s so many different experiences on so many different set ups. One persons ‘really smooth’ and ‘really sharp’ is another persons really stuttery and really blurry. I do take most things on Youtube with a large pinch of salt. People have got to keep adding content and optimisation videos for the sake of clicks. Some of them are helpful though.
Very much definitely this. People shouldn’t feel they have to go out and spend a fortune in order to optimise their hardware when the software itself is badly optimised. I don’t think Youtubers should encourage it either.
Thanks for your response! I changed my AF from Off to 4x and was able to get significantly clearer images with only losing about 1-2FPS.
For Motion Reprojection, no matter what I do, it never seems like it is working. When I set it to Always On, it feels like I am actually getting more stutters than when I leave it off completely.
I know what you mean, it is because for the reprojection to work you actually need more fps beforehand, so if you got lets say 30fps without reprojection and you turn it on, you will be working with probably 25 fps or less, so you will not reach the needed 30fps for it to work.
To find the best setting, enable in the developer OpenXR tool the “frame time overlay”, blue is good, red is less than 30fps. Then while you are in game, set most settings to low, and once you get a stable blue box for most of the time, start increasing settings and effects.
You will be surprised how some settings seem to not hurt the fps at all, even at high settings. Don’t be afraid to set AA and Texture supersampling higher, this might not be the reason you are losing frames. But the biggest impact is TAA from my experience, sadly also the most significant.
These are just you tube influencers!
Real world is very different for everyone. I would put ZERO stock in what either say. Look around here and elsewhere and you will find the experience as different as the day is long!
I would just say I have a 3090 and doing VR for awhile now I would say it was an improvement. You will partially have to decide if the cost is worth it. Personally right now the scalpers have made the decision easy for many. I would pass on it at current prices.
Thanks for the response! I tried what you said, and this is the first time I have been able to experience motion reprojection, and WOW does it make looking out the side windows smooth!
However to get to the 30 FPS to get motion reprojection to work, I need to lower my render resolution too low for my liking for looking out the front of the plane. However if I drop the refresh rate of my G2 to 60Hz, I works flawlessly.
Now I just need to figure out if my stomach can handle the flicker at 60Hz.
Thanks for the response! I was wondering if there videos were too good to be true. I have no intention of supporting the scalpers, and really just wondering if I can find an RTX 3090 at retail prices, if it will give me the performance boost that I am looking for, or will I just be wishing for more power still.
After many hours of testing and trying a lot of different setups and combinations ( repro ON/OFF ), here is what gives me the best and most confortable performance results on an I9-10900KF averaging 5ghz in the sim, RTX 3090.
Repro: ON ( Can’t stand judders )
OXR: 65
TAA: 100
457.30
REVERB G2
LIVE WEATHER ( But did 99% of my test in heavy weather)
LIVE TRAFFIC
Mostly rural and bush flying on a 172 classic, high terrain mesh ( Alaska )
I won’t use any superlative like “butter smooth, stutter free” etc…, it seems highly subjective and noone has the same standards nor perception it seems.
I have very few prop artefacts, but they are here, mostly visible on the ground. The roll for take off is ok, once I reach 1000ft, I am pretty much all good and all in the blue. A few micro stutters while banking hard, but overall acceptable given the state of the sim.
Even with that, it still beats the hell out of any other sim I experienced in VR.
HIGH quality seems to override the other texture filtering setting… One less headache…
Eventhough it’s far from perfect, I’m having a really good time, it feels great.
I got the 3090 because I needed it for work, Cycle render viewport in Blender is just great, I can review model live on zoom with colleagues and clients, in real time and in these COVID time, it’s a life saver. FS2020 was the bonus and not a small one.
I’m still looking for better performance as others are. I also use XP11 and in VR right now it is far superior. I’m on my 3rd head set and improvements in clarity and FPS have been incremental only. The last couple of years nothing astounding for improvement has occurred.
i think some people use the wrong scenes for performance test, they need to avoid the startup, glasscockpit planes and new york probably… those are all exception scenes, where we just have to hope asobo improves the performance.
and i also can not understand how peoplee can fly with stutter, for me it breaks the immersion of flying, motion reprojection all the way.
