Ghost Airports - M52, 0M1, and KWAV

There are at least 3 ghost airports in the game in Tennessee, USA. M52 (Franklin-Wilkins), 0M1 (Scott), and KWAV (Waverly). The first two, M51 and 0M1, have been closed for decades and are redeveloped, even on the Bing maps used. KWAV is non-existent, and never has existed.

Are you using Developer Mode or made changes in it?

Yes

Have you disabled/removed all your mods and addons?

Brief description of the issue:

Closed or non-existent airports depicted (M51, 0M1, and KWAV). M51 and 0M1 have been closed for over 20 years and have been redeveloped as parks and industrial space, and are depicted as such in the base maps as well as in sectional charts. KWAV is a non-existent airport located in an open pasture, it does not appear in the maps or in any charts.

** Personal Comments and Observations**

M51 should be reported to FAA for Data Integrity as it still appears even in current Jepp AIRAC. But this one is in Mississippi?

Whoops, typo on my part. It should be M52, not M51…and it’s Franklin-Wilkins, not Williams.

I just have no idea how these airfields that have been closed for so long even got in the game. M52 was closed 17 years ago, and 0M1 well before that. 0M1 doesn’t even appear on sectionals any more. M52 at least is still listed as a closed airfield in sectionals and the yellow Xs are weathered to a point where an AI scanning the map might not notice them, so that might explain why it’s still in the game. The data set they are using must be certifiably ancient. Oddly enough, the airport that replaced both 0M1 and M52, Beech River Regional Airport (PVE), is bugged and has no lights in the game.

Still no idea where they got the KWAV from…no airport has ever existed there, certainly not one important enough to be assigned an ICAO code. The only airport near the small town of Waverly is 0M5 (Humphreys County Airport).

Our team is unable to reproduce this issue, are there reproduction steps and results you can share with us? Thanks!

HI there, I’m not sure what you mean by you can’t reproduce it, as it’s not a bug but rather closed airports that are still listed as opened in the game. M52, 0M1, and KWAV are listed as airports in the world map (in Tennessee, United States), but in reality they’ve been closed for many years (or, in the case of KWAV, never existed). It’s just a matter of removing them from the game in the next update.

There are a lot of closed airports that should not exist in the game. Just found one today in Germany. Eggebeck Air Base, ETME, was closed 1 August 2006! It’s now a solar farm and shows up as such on Bing and Google maps. But you can still select it in MSFS. There was another in USA that I reported a couple years ago and in Australia but I don’t know if they ever got removed.

And then you get airports like KSAC which only has 2 active runways but shows in game as having 3 (16/34 is closed and you can see the X on the runway in game.) And I submitted that ages ago with no change still. Maybe FS2024 will be able to fix these problems more easily. Dunno.

6 months and many updates later and these are still in the game. I also noted another one today, M88 Cornelia Fort Airport near downtown Nashville, Tennessee. This airport closed decades ago, with its old tarmac being converted to a model airplane flying field. Even in-game the runways have large "X"s painted on them.

Does anyone have any idea when these will be removed, or why they were inserted in the first place?

So I was looking at the first batch of World Hub airports that have been updated and added into the sim. Surprisingly (or not maybe) one that was updated in Germany was EDCD Cottbus-Drewitz. This is an airfield that has been closed for some time. Wikipedia quote, “The airport closed to all air traffic for the final time on 31 January 2020. Due to investors pulling out, there has been several failed attempts to turn the civilian airport into a freight hub with a 3000 m runway, similar in concept to Frankfurt-Hahn.”

If you look at the airfield with Google maps or Bing you can clearly see the large white X marks on the runway denoting an inactive strip. So I don’t know who put in the updated details to keep it active in the sim or how robust the checking of such data is.
