It would seem so, but I haven’t tested it extensively yet. As usual, it’s not the easiest thing to land. The instrument readability has improved (the colors seem more vivid), and the yellow warning lights on the right side no longer light up when the engine is idling, so taxiing speed implicitly improves a little because you no longer have to sustain the engine speed. The sounds have significantly improved and are now more vivid. These last two aspects alone are worth the effort of adapting the mod to MSFS2024. I’ll fly it in the next few days and report my impressions.
Thank you so much for looking into it.
I just tried it in FS2020. I love it!
On a hot start I no longer need to remove the nuke panel, and change the radio stack. This by itself is a great improvement already. I like that the afterburner finally does not kick into the 2nd stage. And the best part: the rattling sound is finally gone if you are above 400km/h with gears down. Very nice work.
Unfortunatley, I can not figure out how to make it work in FS2024.
As the mod’s creator rightly pointed out, and I thank him for his kindness and availability, a minimal option is to copy the flight_model.cfg and engines.cfg files from the mod into the gks folder. This improves the flight model, but it’s the minimal option. The only thing you can do is simply copy the contents (first make a backup of the original GKS directory) of the mod (not the folder containing it) into the gks-mig21 folder. Then, with the fre utility, rebuild the layout.json. At this point, you should have a working mod (except for the ground service vehicles, which shouldn’t be recalled because they cause problems with the simulator), an additional livery (Yugoslavian), but the cockpit of the old skins remains the original one. It’s a tedious procedure, but it worked on my system.
I should add that the MiG-21 GKS is installed in the community directory, and that since I no longer have MSFS2020, I simply saved and used the copy of the latest update from MSFS2020, then manually copied it to the community directory (not comunity2024). It has always worked; I had purchased it on Orbx.
Thanks so much, I will give it a try again.
I found if you add “zzz” to the main folder name (so 2024 loads it last) and update the layout.json (you can use the generator app available online) it works first try on 2024 (marketplace edition in my case).
Flight model, I carried out a fairly extensive test flight: taking off from HECA Cairo towards Beni Suef AB at 12,000m, I reached Mach 1.98 with a ventral tank and two missiles (a result consistent with the real aircraft: Mach 2 was reached only in clean configuration). Reaching this speed required a lot of time and fuel (Full AB from takeoff), as expected. Roll rate: at 400km/h with TO flaps and landing gear extended, the aircraft is slow in rolling even if the turn radius is tight (conditions quite close to stalling). At Mach 0.8-0.9 in uniform straight flight, the roll rate becomes noticeable but not exuberant. Things change drastically at Mach 1.2 or more: the rate becomes crazy. If you’re in straight, even flight, everything is fine, but I did the “brave thing” of pulling the maximum roll while climbing at that speed. The result was a very violent spin. This, and I don’t know if it’s the result of the mod or an aspect of the original product, reflects the characteristics of the MiG-21 quite well, but (and I think it’s a problem with msfs2020-2024), I managed to recover from the spin even though at that rotation/acceleration speed a real pilot would have had difficulty recovering or ejecting. As it is now, the roll rate seems adequately structured to me. The plane turns tight, but like in the real plane, if the turn is not sustained with afterburner, the plane loses maneuvering energy very quickly. This applies to any aerobatic maneuver, as is evident from all the pilot reports I’ve read. The acceleration with AB is noticeable but not exceptional, as it should be: the two-seater versions were lighter than the single-seaters and therefore more lively. Landing: Performed according to the parameters reported in the MiG-21 DCS manual, it went correctly and “without difficulty,” although “without difficulty” requires a certain amount of expertise. Ground handling: no longer having to keep the engine “happy” to prevent the two yellow pressure lights from coming on allows for acceptable ground handling, but it’s still not correct: with the engine idle, the plane still starts to move. Ultimately, YES: this mod is a truly substantial improvement, and even though it wasn’t designed for MSFS2024 and isn’t compatible with it, the extra work to import it into the simulator is worth it. Have fun!
so this is not " better " ?
This aircraft is massive fun and a true piloting experience, far from the fly-by-wire, computer optimized modern fighters. The cockpit is very well designed, everything works as expected and the flight model seems true enough to the original (maybe a bit permissive with high speed flight at very low altitude). It handles correctly, it’s not a fighter but an interceptor, it flies like one as far as I can tell.
The score of 3.5/5 on MSFS store is largely the result of casual players expecting arcadey gameplay (1 stars and 2 stars), or unforgiving hardcore nerds (3 stars). For me, it is a solid 4-4.5 stars and a heartfelt recomendation.
FOR THE DEVS, if they come here : there’s an error with a tooltip in the cockpit. Left panel, a switch is incorrectly labelled “AUTOPILOT MODE. LOW ALTITUDE” when it is in fact a 3 position switch to deploy and turn on/off external headlights, below the wings.
The mod is not “the best”, but it definitely and pleasantly improves the original product, and therefore it is definitely worth the effort to make it compatible with msfs2024, even if it is a tedious process.
any news about this addon ?
Their discord channel (specifically the general one) says to expect it in October. It’s unclear if this is Version 2 or just a rerelease of the current one on PS5 as they are currently focused on bringing their stuff to that marketplace, but that’s where we stand pending further clarity. I suspect it’s V2 as they’ve been working on it since late 2025.
I have the pre update version. I see there’s a paid update in MP. Is this now 2024 plane? Is it worh the price? I haven’t heard of any notable improvements
I don’t see the MiG-21 listed in the marketplace in 2024. I do see the MiG-25. If that is what you are referencing, then yes it is the newer version.
Maybe it was the 25. Sorry.
