I understand the principles of the G1000 and G3000 GPS but, for the life of me, I ccannot get the the Cessna172 to follow nmy flightplan. It shows in the Flt Plan window of the GPS, and CDI is set to GPS, NAV and AP are on. But the plane does nort react.
Start on a heading that will intercept your GPS course. You probably also want to start an approach at an initial approach fix (IAF) or intermediate fix (IF) at the least. Otherwise, you’ll want to activate “vector to final” (VTF). But still, you need to be on a track that is intercepting your selected course.
Yeah, in the picture above you’re about 135 degrees off your course. It won’t engage at that angle. Fly HDG mode back towards the course at 90 deg or less and arm NAV mode and it should engage when it intercepts the course.
Based on the above screenshot, switch to HDG mode, turn the CRS knob until you’re at around 330 (you want to intercept at around 30 degrees to optimize the bank and give the plane a good chance to align) and just wait until you’re within 2 dots of the Desired TracK (DTK). GPS will flash to indicate it’s taking over Lateral Navigation and you should start to track with the leg.
Thx for the replies. Will try again, armed with the knowledge.
HDG knob instead? I’m pretty sure the CRS knob won’t do anything in GPS mode, since the course indicator automatically aligns with the flight plan in GPS mode.
