GPU AMD or Nvidia for my rig

Hello all,

Well I finally got my computer pc upgraded after months of saving and finding the correct parts to make it work with FS2024. The only thing I believe I am missing now is the GPU. Not sure which one will work with my current configuration. Below is the hardware I currently have.

  • ASUS PRIME B350-PLUS AM4 AMD B350 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 HDMI ATX Motherboards - AMD ( BIOS upgrade to most current version )

  • AMD 7 5800x3D chipset.

  • G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) and 32GB ( 2 x 16GB) = 48 GIG

  • 500gig SSD drive ( Will be adding another ssd drive down the road)

  • Power supply I believe it’s 850 gold If I remember correct.

Now it’s figuring out which GPU will work for me . I have always went with Nvidia. I’m looking for a GPU that works in the middle not cheap or expensive. Something that is in the middle and will last me a very long time. Since I know it’s going to cost me a lot.

Any kind of help would be awesome!

Thank you,

Any modern GPU will work, but it will be slightly bottlenecked by the lack of PCI Express 4.0 support. I do mean slightly, however, it’s not really worth worrying about.
TechPowerUp has an excellent test that shows that with an even faster GPU than you’re considering, you lose 2-3% (so you’ll lose less than that):

So it’s really all about the cost and price vs performance. I think you need to specify a bit further how much “a lot” is to you, since you can get a GPU from say $300 to about $2000.
What resolution you play at also matters a great deal, since the GPU is the main (almost only) component that cares about whether you run 1080p, 1440p, 4K or something else.

To me the middle for NVIDIA is the range RTX 4070 Super to RTX 4070 Ti Super, about $600 to $800, which should work nicely with a 5800X3D. However the CPU should really work nicely with anything that’s in the “middle”.

We need more information.

  • What resolution is your monitor?
  • What are your expectations on settings?
  • What is your expectations on framerate?

On an anecdotal note, I’ve been using an AMD RX5700 for the last 2 years as my first AMD card and it’s been flawless. Unless Ray Tracing or DLSS is a priority for you, I’m happy to recommend them. You tend to get more rasterization performance and VRAM for the same monery these days.

Thank you for reply and info.
To tell you the truth this will be my first PC game I will be playing. I have always had a Xbox console.

PC games I never really like because of how they crashed plus video driver updates. But that was back in the days now I would like to play on PC.

My current monitor I will be playing on is
49” QLED Business Monitor C49HG90DMN wide monitor. After looking online the resolution 3,840 x 1,080.

My expectation are low right now. But with the rig I put together I think I will be okay. I’m just looking to have fun and fly around.

Down the road I might buy a better 49 wide screen. For now I think this will work.

That looks like a really nice super-ultrawide monitor! I have a 1080p “normal” ultrawide monitor; once you get used to it in MSFS, you can never go back.

However, that’s a LOT more pixels to push than a normal 1080p monitor, so the GPU will need to be commensurately stronger, both in terms of processing power and video memory.

So, in my opinion look for something with at least 12 GB of VRAM. I would say the Radeon RX6700XT/6750XT and up, with the 6800 being a great option. The nVidia side is tricky, because they’re rather stingy with VRAM. So there you’re stuck with the RTX3080 12GB or above. FYI, I’m recommending previous generations, because your other parts are previous generation too, so I’m making an inference here…

I would also suggest you get a newer motherboard. Although the B350 chipset is compatible with your CPU, it’s missing a few features due to it’s age. A few that stand out are:

  1. PCIE 4.0 - It will support faster GPUs and SSDs.
  2. Smart Access Memory - Not super useful for MSFS2020, but who knows for 2024.
  3. Better memory support (through optimized traces, if nothing else), ESPECIALLY when using 4 sticks.

In a nuthsell, that’s a nice CPU, so don’t cheap out too much on the motherboard.

You didn’t ask about memory, but I’ll give unsolicited advice anyway. Aim for a minimum for 3200 MT/s memory, with CL16. Also, mixing RAM capacities is a bad idea for Ryzen. In your case, once the the first 2x8 sticks are filled, you’re going into “Flex Mode”, which will reduce the memory bandwidth. If possible, get all 4 of the same sticks. See this article:

I just swapped my 4060 8Gb to 4070 Ti Super (16Gb).
I can run everything in Ultra, even in VR. Its a sick card that doesnt ruin you. It will last long enough I think.
You could go for 4070 Ti but that has just 12Gb VRAM. I think Ti Super is worth the extra cash.

I had my 5800X3D on an MSI B550-A Pro motherboard and it was a great combination. You can buy that motherboard for about $100.

No brainer upgrade from the B350 chipset.
Be aware you’ll need a WiFi PCI adapter card if you plan on using WiFi.
I had a WiFi 6 adapter and paid around $30 for it.

Nice. I’m waiting for my 5700x3d in the mail; I also have a B550 board. I would have loved to get the 5800x3d, but I got the 57x3d for stupidly good deal. The idea was that it would arrive today so that I can neglect my family over the weekend, but sadly it’s not to be.

Welcome to PC gaming in 2024

To be fair most games don’t crash much these days, but some are more temperamental than others.
