GPU and Thread Limited?

Hello all, ive been trying to figure out why i keep getting a Limited by GPU and Thread?
Ive got an HP Omen i7 10700k @ 3.80k cpu RTX 3060Ti Nvidia 56gig Ram.

The sim is on the D:\ drive Samsung 980 pro 1tb Im not a computer wiz, know just basics. Getting frustrated with this issue. Would just like to get the studders out and with a middle between performance and quality. If i could just get some tips of mabey what next, or point me in the right direction to just make it smoother.  First time on a fourm, i can get more screen shots or info if needed. Can usually work this stuff out, but this is getting above my know how.

Welcome to the joy that is tweaking MSFS. Lol.

I would first make sure your expectations are in order. This sim can be very resource demanding, especially if installing add-ons, so don’t expect first person shooter type frame rates. Actually, being locked at a reliable 30fps is fine for most things in the sim, so you are already doing ok in that regard. The things that may impact your enjoyment now are stuttering issues.

Because your main thread (the CPU) frame time is close to the gpu frame time, I would dial back CPU intensive settings. That will be the easiest step in limiting stutters, and that will make a big improvement in playability. Turning down the traffic (planes, ground vehicles, boats, workers, and fauna) will be the most obvious settings to lower and found in the traffic settings tab. In the graphics settings tab, the terrain level of detail is another big CPU hog. This can be thought of like a render distance setting, where the higher settings mean you see buildings, trees, mountains, etc further away and in greater detail. Object level of detail has an effect as well on the CPU, and is like a render distance that determine when specific object details pop in/out.

Ideally you want to be gpu limited for optimal smoothness. Some background processes also create stutters (Razer Synapse is a huge cause of stutters), so killing unnecessary programs can help too. If 30 fps isn’t fast enough for you, then first dial your CPU usage in, then try changing the render scale to less than 100 and let it upscale. That is an easy way to increase your fps without sacrificing much image quality (as long as you don’t become main thread limited again in the process). At this point, it becomes a balancing act with settings.

Your hardware should be playable at least on medium settings without much additional tweaking, but keep in mind prebuilt systems like yours are often not very optimized at the OS level and may have additional bloatware that can hamper performance. The above suggestions should get you started at least, and then can work on fine tuning and optimizing later if needed.

Running at 4K on a 3060Ti is pushing it a bit I think.

What happens if you try DirectX 12 and turn on DLSS, maybe at the “Quality” setting to start?

Alright, thank you for the indepth reply. Seriously, thanks. I will screen shot my settings.

Direct 12 with DLSS on Quality, everything is pretty fuzzy/ blurry.
I can have everything cranked up on D11, TAA. But when trying to land or flying throught mountains it gets down to 23 22 fps. Of course then really big studders… I know im not going to get over like 36 to 42 fps with crisp 4k. 1080 is super blurry. I have a 70" samsung as the screen. Anything other then 3840x2160 is really blury.

The first thing I would do is cut your TLOD and OLOD back to 100 each (that can be fine tuned later) and see how you like it. The larger LOD’s make things look better at a distance, but it becomes a point of diminishing returns. Clouds I would set to medium. Raymarched reflections could to be cut back a notch, but I’ve found the performance hit to be minimal. I think I heard the glass cockpit refresh rate also hits the CPU a fair bit and there is negligible difference between medium and high. If you don’t use them much, you can cut it to low for more of a boost at the expense of slower updating of the cockpit screen.

Give that a shot and see how it goes. I would park at a busy major airport and see what your main thread times are (not so much for fps). Pick a weather preset and a set time instead of real world weather and time. This way you can repeat this test with similar conditions. It would be good if you can get your CPU frame times under 20ms, great if under 15ms if you don’t mind the reduced settings necessary for it.

Once that is done, you’ll probably see some improvement in the gpu frame times as well, resulting in higher fps. If you are happy at this point, I would turn v-sync on in the game settings and limit it to 30 fps. This will give you pretty smooth performance with minimal stutters. If you want to aim for higher frame rates, you’ll then have to either turn other graphical settings down or reduce the render scale. I have a 6600 XT that I use to run a 27" 4k monitor and typically run it the render scale at 85. It’s a little blurry, but still usable for me. I don’t even bother with FSR 2.0 (AMD’s equivalent to DLSS), so give DX12 a try with regular TAA antialiasing. I’ve seen a number of DLSS blurry complaints, so you may like TAA better. When I had an i5-8400, DX12 helped with stutters even though the average frame rates were about the same. Then again the DX11 vs 12 debate is not likely to be soon settled because everyone’s system is different.

I was going to say the same.

The gpu you have us a stretch with 4k…try a 1440p for best results

I have it tuned to my desires and it’s works fine. It goes back to my very first comment about expectations. I don’t expect this card to run the sim at native 4k60 and perfect visuals and I have dialed in to where I can achieve a locked 30fps at an airport like KORD (Chicago O’hare) with mild FSLTL traffic running with pleasing visuals. In the air I’m getting 45-60fps depending on cloud cover. It’s taken a long time with tuning and a processor upgrade to help with the TLOD load, but I’m good now until I decide to upgrade the GPU.

Testing right now. Am i looking for all green on this DEVMode FPS inset? Or just to where there are no studders?

I pay attention to the numbers and how the video actually looks. A red but locked 30fps will look better than 45fps with stutters. And by stutters, I usually refer to panning the camera around. The sim could fly smooth with a fixed camera view, but see stutters when panning the camera.

Side note if you use an Xbox style controller: When panning and the center dot crosses a cockpit control, the sim will slow the panning action (something I hate). That isn’t the same as stuttering, so aim the camera outside the window or use an external view.

I tried that and for me it didn’t work
I7 10k § 4070 super
So best way for me is no adding dlss and frame gen…
I keep things playing in TAA motion dx12

I want to add this, why in the sudden everyone I see I looking for i7 10k, also I see prices going up lately on them. Thank you
