I’m using the GeForce 1660 Super and it performs well with the sim. But one thing I’ve noticed, is that when I’m in cockpit view and looking and the panel itself, the GPU ultilization in the GeForce Experience overlay decreases to about 70-75%, but when just panning to the left or right in the cockpit, without any screens in sight, I jumps right back up to 95-100% as it should be (right?). FPS decreases from around 50 FPS down to about 30 FPS.
My cockpit refresh rate is set at Medium in my settings, I’m using the A320FBW mod, but the same happens with the default A320. Same thing happens when I set it to low.
Is it just how it is? Funny thing is, right when I’ve changed my settings either in-game or in NCP, the cockpit is buttery smooth with the first boot up after the changes, but the second flight I’m doing, changes the ultilization back to what’s described in this thread.
The glass panel cockpit panels are pretty CPU intensive. So most likely you’re limited by the main thread (CPU limited) in the cockpit (lowering GPU utilization, since the CPU can’t feed data to the GPU fast enough), and GPU limited while looking outside (CPU utilization dropping, GPU utilization increasing).
Ah I see. That’s something I read a lot about on this forum, but I never seem to quite understand it completely. Is it a bug that we can hope Asobo fixes or is it something in my setup that has to be changed/upgraded?
Nope, it’s just the way the sim works. There will always be something limiting your FPS. If it’s swapping between CPU/GPU limited, you’re pretty much where you want to be.
There might be improvements/optimizations in the future, but there will always be a limiting factor.
If you’re not happy with the FPS you’re getting, then you can decide to upgrade your system. But if that 30 FPS is the minimum, and the experience is smooth, I wouldn’t worry about it.
Turning down the instrument refresh rate greatly increasesyour FPS and doesn’t look to bad in some planes. CPU utilization should work better with DX12, as there is only a maximum of 2 or 4 cores working at the moment.
Alright, thank you so much for your answers both of you
A32nx mod also adds a lot to the CPU utilization as it adds tons of calculations that weren’t supposed to be there in the first place.
I believe that both the mod and the sim are far from being finally optimized. For instance, I recently saw a pull request for a change that allows several instruments not being updated in case the related value(s) don’t change. Not sure if this is already in the master builds but it should take off some CPU load.
Turn off the copilot screens…

Oh, right.
Gonna try that right now.
That gives me a 3-5fps boost
