I enjoy flying along the Mediterranean, which led me to download (from Flightsim.to) a free bespoke model for the airport at Reggio Calabria, which I then programmed into a flight plan originating at LIRN (Naples). The Simbrief route for the flight took me to just to the west of Mount Etna, where I picked up the FOSQ1E arrival that loops south and, after a turn to the northeast, meets the LOC A approach to LIRC. The scenery along the route – from just north of Sicily and onward to the airport – is awesome. But what I had not realized is that the LOC A approach delivers you to a series of ground based strobe pathway lights leading first to the east and then curving north to line up with Runway 33. It makes for an awesome landing, which I found best to hand fly from about 1500 feet. I have now flown the route in the PMDG 737-800, the Fenex A320 and the ATR 72-600. The ATR was by far the best option.
Strongly encourage those who share my interests to try arrival and approach. It would serve well as a discovery flight or landing challenge.
