I believe this measure usually helps when specific “fs-base…” packages have been corrupted and consistently block the update download but under certain circumstances it may not be a good idea to delete packages randomly. Before WU4 in my endless attempts to try and stop what I call the “main screen CTD loop” (i.e. the game crashing every single time during the transition between the initial loading screens and the main menu), I did several tests of deleting “fs-base…” folders if only to force MSFS to redownload stuff. Some times I’d remove small folders, other times I’d remove bigger ones.
So it did download what was missing each time but a) it didn’t really help with this specfic issue (however disabling Xbox Game Bar positively helped) and, most importantly, b) it somehow broke the entire installation as it wouldn’t update via MS Store to 1.14.6.0 no matter what I tried. Eventually I had to fully uninstall MSFS but then due to some other tests MS Store wouldn’t even redownload the game and I had to reinstall Windows.
So users delete official folders at their own risk (although often it CAN help unblocking update downloads).
