Grumman Albatross HU-16/G111 Thread

Can someone knowledgeable advise if I should be able to fly her nonstop from the Isle of Man (EGNS) to Gander (CYQX)? Well, not airport to airport, but “water to water”, but for reference’s sake I named the nearest airports. The many variants, drop tanks, etc. confuse me. I am going to use the passenger variant with the standard GNS avionics.

No, it doesn’t have the range to cross the Atlantic in one go. The manual may be helpful to learn the range and various configurations.

Thank you!

@kityatyi Actually, if the winds are favourable (ie: less than 5 knots headwind, or preferably a tailwind) you should be able to do this run without any issues, with the HU-16 or drop tank equipped G-111s anyway.

The max range with drop tanks is ~2300 nm. That trip is 1859 nm, so you have plenty of margin. Without external tanks the range drops to ~1500 nm, so no chance there.

You still want to follow a specific climb profile to get the best range out of her though…

  • Max power for takeoff, with no flaps (if runway allows). 1 notch flaps on water takeoffs.
  • Set 2500 rpm and 46" MAP as soon as you reach 500 feet (if over water), or at 1000 feet over land. Aim for a climb rate of 1000 fpm.
  • At 3000 feet reduce climb rate to 500 ft/min, set 36-38" MAP, reduce mixture to the middle of its range, labeled “Normal” on the overhead panel, and set rpm to 2400.
  • Cimb to 10,000 - 15,000 feet depending on which altitude gets you the best (or least worst) winds
  • Once at cruise altitude set the throttles to 30" MAP, 2000 rpm, and reduce mixture just slightly from the halfway point
  • Aim for indicated cruise airspeed of around 125-135 knots
  • Don’t forget to make sure your landing lights are retracted, and close the oil cooler doors and cowl flaps as much as possible in cruise.
  • Get a nice book… gonna be here awhile!

Hope that helps, and good luck!

I was probably looking at the range without the external tanks then.

@FndrStrat06 Yeah, actually the range readout on the G-111 is bugged I think in the current version.

That’s fixed in the next update, and the number of variants is going to be cleaned up as well. Will be much less confusing.

Cheers.

Thank you so much!

Wish I saw your post before I departed! I eventually went for a shorter trip from the Isle of Man, only down to Cornwall, landed in Falmouth Bay, and then flew back.

But I will absolutely try the transatlantic hop soon, knowing it’s actually doable, using the quick guide you put together!

I’m having a helluvuh time getting the engines started. I followed the checklist, but the engine won’t turn over.

Mag: both
fuel select: main
fuel pump: on
primer: 5 seconds
mixture: lean
starter: 15 seconds

What am I missng?

also, the left gen is showing positive amps even though both engines are off?

@SinfulDanTheMan Yeah, there’s a little amperage “bleed through” on the generator bus when you connect it to the main with the switches. Never been able to track down the source of that, but it shouldn’t be an issue.

A few questions…
By “not turning over” you mean the prop isn’t turning at all?
Do you hear the starter sounds?
Are you having this issue on 2020 or 2024?
If 2024, is the plane installed locally? If so please delete and try the streamed version.
Is this a new problem for you?
Are you at a high altitude airport? If not try setting mixtures full rich for starting.

I assume you’re trying this from cold and dark. Maybe the battery has somehow been drained…

Can you please try a runway start, shutting down, and seeing if it will restart after?

Thanks.

sorry, by not turn over i mean not catching and firing. poor wording. yes the props starter works and spins while holding the button. they spin and whine but never catch. tried both engines. i must be missing a step just not sure which one. this is on 2024. i’m at sea level.

@SinfulDanTheMan Ok, and are you running the plane locally installed or streaming? If local, then please uninstall it and try the streamed version.

Do you have any kind of hardware controls or switches bound to anything mixture or ignition related that might be interfering?

Does using auto start (ctrl-e) work?

If autostart works, then restart your flight and turn on tooltips and try this procedure:

  • Set full fuel in all tanks
  • check that fuel selectors are on main (they should be by default, but confirm this with tooltip)
  • mixtures full rich
  • throttles idle
  • both fuel boost pumps on (transfer pumps off)
  • mags on both for both engines
  • master battery switch on
  • wait for fuel pressure to rise on the gauges
  • hold down primer for 5 or 6 seconds
  • hold down engine starter button for at least 30 seconds. If it won’t catch after 30 then there’s a problem somewhere.

Let me know how that goes?

@SinfulManSinfulMan

Did you inadvertently pull down the master ignition switch? It’s the large flat thing on a bar between the mag selectors.

My method is pretty much the same as above with just a few small differences.

Battery on
Avionics on
Mags to both
Mixture full rich unless at a high altitude airport, then possibly a quarter back
Throttles cracked slightly
Fuel pumps on
Left primer long enough to hear ten pumps
Press and hold the starter
Repeat last two steps for right engine, but you’ll have to estimate the primer time

It’s interesting to note that in my 2020 setup, I can switch to external view and the starter will keep running as long as I don’t let go of the mouse. This makes for nice views of the start smoke without having to use Ctrl+E.

@Ramasurinen i see the HU-16 has received another update on fs2020, what is the changelog ?

@ThijsF70 Thanks for the heads up!

This 2020 update, v1.3.4, is a parity update for the 2024 v2.3.2 Albatross, and contains the following changes…

Grumman Albatross FS2020 V1.3.4

  • Added new US Navy UF-1 Prototype livery for the HU-16
  • Fixed gust lock not disengaging during engine auto-start sequence
  • Fixed incorrect window operation tooltips
  • Fixed missing autopilot button highlights
  • Fixed some checklist value discrepancies and missing steps
  • Improved several control and instrument animations
  • Minor cockpit texture fixes
  • Fixed minor error in fuel selector code
  • Fixed localization errors in camera titles
  • Fixed some missing localization entries
  • Fixed LOD issue with fuel caps disappearing

  • Improved G3x screen materials
  • Fixed bug preventing aileron movement via keyboard control
  • Fixed: Autopilot now drives ailerons directly instead of aileron trim
  • Fixed some missing airframe and interior LODs and improved LOD switch points
  • Fixed voltmeter showing incorrect battery voltage under certain loads
  • Fixed: Prevented squat strut from deploying when starting a flight in an addon water/dock parking spot
  • Fixed incorrect checklist instructions and values for propeller rpm governor settings
  • Fixed: Rain drop impact sounds removed when snowing

  • Fixed incorrect Garmin G3X MFD bus connection and emissive buttons

Note, there is a bug with the activation direction of the fuel transfer switches when using a mouse in this update, which will be corrected in the next. They’re usable, but not quite right.

Cheers!

Awesome stuff

Incredible update, thank you. Going to try a round the world on just water runways now that starting cold/dark in the water doesn’t throw the squat strut out.

Just a heads up, in the checklist on 2020 it has you setting the mixture to full lean for engine start (in the text, when you move it full rich it recognizes it correctly). Haven’t found any other bugs.

Hello,

Any hope of a simbrief profile being created for the HU-16/G111 (and drop tank Variant) being created anytime soon?

Regards,

Marco

@MeerkatADV Thanks for the report. I’ve fixed those up for the next updates for both sims.

Good luck on your trip!

Out of curiosity what is the new engine limits for RPM/MP? I ran it with realism on and max throttle/max RPM for a while and never killed them.
