Grumman Albatross HU-16/G111 Thread

Just had a super weird glitch with the 2024 G1000 passengers model where the torque and MP wouldn’t stabilize. Pretty sure I started everything normally, didn’t have any flags in the engine status pages, no idea what caused it. Closed out, reopened cold and dark and started up and took off no problem. No idea except maybe something in the engine realism freaking out.

Just had it again, torque pressures, MP, RPMs all fluctuating like mad, can’t climb. But no indicators of a problem. Tried changing my hardware settings in case that was the issue and nothing. Also I can’t get the standby attitude indicator to turn on. It say it’s on but it’s just blank.

@MeerkatADV If you have the “Realistic Engine Limits” option on the clipboard turned on then that sounds like extreme spark plug fouling. You’ll need to set your mixtures appropriately for each power/rpm setting with that option turned on.

Immediately after engine start the mixtures should be leaned as much as possible, and kept lean during taxi, as fouling increases quickly at low rpm and low manifold pressure. Full rich should only be selected just before takeoff. It can be left full rich above 40" map, but should be set to medium lean for cruise, and full lean for descent.

If you experience fouling you can clear it by leaning aggressively and running high rpm. It clears quite quickly.

Hope that helps!

Which standby attitude indicator are you having trouble with, in the HU-16 or G-111? (Edit, sorry missed that you mentioned G1000, will see if I can replicate).

Edit #2: I tested the G5 standby attitude in the G1000 G-111 and it’s working fine for me (on SU7 beta). Are you running the plane locally installed? If so I recommend uninstalling and running it streamed. If it works fine again that way, then re-download the plane and it should be good.

Cheers.

That sounds like it will fix the throttle issue. I wasn’t adjusting mixture due to the supercharger. And yes I’m running locally installed. I’ll try streaming and see if that fixes the G5.

Edit, can confirm plug fouling was the issue on the throttle/torque. Still can’t get the G5 to display though. Even tried in the Hu16 and same thing. When I hover over it, it says it is on. But it’s blank. So either there’s a brightness setting I don’t know about or something else is keeping me from seeing it.

@MeerkatADV If the G5 is failing in both planes even when streamed that sounds like some other plane or addon is conflicting and overwriting its variables. Can you please temporarily clear your community folder and see if that cures it?

Thanks.

Yep the enhanced G5 mod did it. I’ve got it back. Thanks.

Out of curiosity, what’s the liquid storage tanks for? Nothing in the manual about it. For the mixture would you consider putting a detent for rich/normal/lean? It’s difficult to see with the camera views and not terribly easy to set manually without a number to look for or detent to hit.

Also small point, but the checklists in the manual and the in-game are different. RPM at cruise is 1900 on the in-game and 1800 on the manual.

@MeerkatADV Thanks for the heads up, I’ll fix the discrepancies in the manual.

The liquid storage is part of a realism improvement I added in the most recent update (2.3.6) in August, along with a ton of other stuff. It simulates the gear well flooding that occurs when the Albatross lands on water.

The gear wells quickly fill with around 400 gallons of water once the aircraft comes down off the step after landing, and they begin to vent again through drain holes during the takeoff run. Quite often the plane will get airborne with quite a lot of water still in the wells though, and it can continue to stream out for over a minute. That effect is now simulated per gear well.

You can see all the details on the changes and improvements in the last update further up in this thread here:

As for mixture detents… I’ll give it some thought, but I believe they would end up causing problems when running lean of peak during long cruise flights. Finding the desired “sweet” spot would become difficult.

Cheers.

I was reading through the earlier posts and saw that just as you replied. I recently switched over to 2024 so the additional capabilities of this version are great. I got the mixture figured out with the lean assist on the G3X version, around 50% seems to be perfect. Thanks for everything you’ve done with this incredible aircraft. I’m just starting a series of flights recreating the first aerial circumnavigation of the world (1924 Army Air Corp). Thankfully I don’t have to do it in an open top, single engine float.

Seems to me the mixture works perfectly as it is. You can put it wherever you want. No need for detents. I think if the levers try to slip into them, that might be annoying. I just completed a 2300 nm trip with a bit of gas left over! From the mouth of the Amazon up to Key West, FL.

I’d just add that a click point to adjust both mixtures or both throttles at once, like ykwe can already do with the RPM, would be really nice

I’ve been on the lookout for a ‘twin engine’ throttle quadrant to fly this (and other flying boats)…finally found an old CH for $50, it arrived two days ago. After spending a day-and-a-half doing battle with it I managed to beat it into submission (mostly)!
Now I come in here and see the lovely Albatross has been updated.

Coincidence? I don’t think so.

Well, the last update was on August 13.

Hmmm, it appears I glossed over the sentence stating the 2020 version is not out yet…

Oh, well…

Anyway, have fun!
