Gunpilot's Challenging Flights - VFR in PNG (Papua new Guinea Highlands)

Welcome to the 12th flight event in the Gunpilot’s Challenging Flights adventure series. This challenging flights event is located in the highlands of Papua New Guinea (not to be confused with Papua Province in Indonesia where we have flown a number of events already), and is again guaranteed to give you more of the heart pounding and sweaty palms experience that you have come to expect from Gunpilot’s flight events.

This flight will have us tackling 23 landings, 8 being conducted on PNG bush strips and the rest (15) will see us, as usual, pitting our piloting capabilities in the Caravan against Mother Earth. While most of the registered airfield landings will not bother you too much (you can keep your duc tape in the flight bag for these landings), the outlandings will see you grappling with very challenging and difficult approaches/landings and departures. You will be pleased to know that there are no water or pylon hazards to negotiate on this adventure, but dense jungle and mountainous terrain will require you to bring your “A” game to the flight. As usual we have some extra challenges in store, one being a 21NM deadstick glide (yes thats right, 21NM, the longest glide so far in the series). There is also a surprise challenge we have not attempted before to deliver us (well maybe some of us ) onto the final destination runway. All this in a 3hr and quite hectic flight which should tell you that you are going to be worn out and sweaty by the time you make the destination runway.

Flight Plan

RECOMMENDATIONS:

  1. Cessna Caravan as all landing and other challenges built into flight are
    tailored for this aircraft specifically

  2. Turn Damage mode off as you will most likely suffer at least hard
landings if not full on crashes

  3. Bring plenty of Duc Tape for running repairs

  4. Crash Helmets are optional, Prayers are advisable

  5. Embrace “SLEW” as it will be your friend by the end of the flight

  6. Practicing to make Caravan landing approaches at IAS of between 40-50knts max will see you nailing difficult landings with ease and precision.

  7. Make it easy on yourself to navigate around the route and accurately pinpoint the exact landing
areas by downloading and using the free “LittleNavMap” s/w you can get on the web - you will
never open the standard sim VFR Map again once you have tried this fantastic app that integrates
    seamlessly with MSFS2020.

This looks like fun but curious why you’re using SE Asia server when the time is anything but APAC friendly?
I’m in Tokyo and that’s 4.30 am Friday morning, and brisvegas in Qld is only an hour ahead of me?
Is it for non APAC timezone people then?

Your flight plan for take off also seems a little dodgy, given you have it taking off on runway 13 with a tailwind right into a mountain. Or is that your first challenge? Should be 31 no?

Live weather may be interesting at that time of day in PNG

Not changing anything…sea works for us

Yes Sir Mr Gunpilot Sir!!!

Whatever.
