Guru3D Updates Performance Metrics with Radeon 6800

I had posted Guru3D’s original analysis of MSFS Performance during Launch Month in August.

Now they’ve updated their performance analysis with some of the latest RTX30 and Radeon 6000 cards.

TL;DR, couldn’t break 60 at Ultra 1080, low 30s to mid-40s at 4K for the top of the line cards today.

So, really, it still stands - 60 fps fluid at all settings and sliders maxed and Ultra 4K is not possible today.

I have no idea what they are testing, truly. I get allways much better scores from my 2080ti running at factory settings without any tweaking. In port royale I get 44,90 fps, they get 36,90, thats a 8fps or a plus of 21,6%.

Same on time spy gfx score, I get 15.947, they have 13.610, also an difference of more than 17% or even allmost 6% more than their fastest 2080ti.

Overclocked a very little I can raise the bar again by 3-5% with no trouble getting 16.450 in timy spy.

So I ask myself how representative all this comparisons are.

It’s not the specific fps that’s super helpful here. It’s how that fps compares against the other cards they tested. By using the same test bed rig, they can eliminate most of the variables that affect this score. Then they can objectively say: “This card is better than this one in this Flight Simulator test”. They’re not saying, “This is the fps you should see with this card in your rig”.

So yes, for whatever reason, your 2080ti rig scores better than their 2080ti rig, but the chart is still helpful to see if it’s worth switching from that 2080ti to something like a 6900xt (it’s not). Or for someone like me looking for the best possible performance for VR or 4k, I can see which is the better buy, something like an rtx 3080 or the 6900xt (it’s the 3080).

Ahh, ok, thank you for that.

So for me, as I allready have near 6800/XT scores with my rig (nothing special, i5-8600k, 32Gb Ram), a gpu update is also obsolete and I can wait relaxed for an 3080ti at an acceptable price. That’s fine!

They must be testing a scenario that is mostly CPU limited such that the top GPUs bunch up at any resolution below 4K

Not the best test scenario for GPUs in MSFS.

Intel Core i9 9900k and Ryzen 9 5950X, aren’t those very recent?

The sim switches between being ‘limited by main thread’ (CPU) and ‘limited by GPU’ depending on what aircraft you are flying, if the virtual cockpit is shown, if you are near a city where photogrammetry needs to load and be processed by the CPU, etc.

So the test case used is very important.

Ok - very good. Something to keep in mind. I think if you look at their first post where they initially rated over 30 cards after August launch, they have a 31 minute typical run which includes both cockpit and external from one of the jetliners, so arguably it is a pretty good stressor test.
