Hardware or software problem?

Hey Guys, looking for suggestion here.

MY config is

Core I7 6700K (Skylar) 4000MHz
AmD RX5700 XT driver Adrenalin 2020 20.9.2 (latest)
Ram 8G x2
Windows 10 64 bit
PSU 650 W
1T SSD for MSFS2020
500G SSSD for Windows
3T HD for others and Steam

MSFS latest update and patch

I run the FS at 1080p with average frame are over 60fps.
Everything was fine. But after more or less 40mins to an hour. The computer just switch off by itself.
Not shutdown , not crash to desktop, not blue screen, nothing but just loss power and off.

I have been monitoring the temperature both CPU and GPU are somewhere around 60deg C…

The PSU is less than 2years and fan is working, and I don’t feel hot around it.

Before I have some problem with the system locale problem which mess up the waypoints and causing very low frame rate when starting “bush trip” and “Tour to Japan”. But this “shutdown” problem did not happened,

After sorting that out, everything was smooth. But it came to this “shutdown” problem.

I am using Afterburner to monitor the temperature during the game.

And the computer can start right up after the “shutdown”

When I use the computer for another task, it dids not have this problem.

Now, I am not sure if this problem is due to the game or the high load of the computer…

Any advice on where to start the trouble shooting is welcome…

Thx in advance!

My first thought is the PSU is going bad.

you could try going back to an older driver revision for your RX5700 XT, and see if that changes when and how any crash/shutdown takes place.

also if you are overclocking anything, revert them too standard timings etc, then retest.

On the other hand, my daughter’s ASUS Radeon RX5700 XT was garbage, and shut down her PC frequently. We replaced it with a Sapphire Radeon RX5700 XT and she has had no issues since.

A straight up shutdown is usually tied to either heat or power.

In the past I have had this issue due to a bad mem stick or overheated, overzealous overclock, bad PSU, a faulty power connector to the video card and a MB that a mosfet had failed. An old CPU that is ready to fail will cause it too especially if it has ever been overclocked.

If it is hw you can usually stress test various parts until you find the issue. You can usually Google for stress test software that focuses on specific parts.

Software is usually easier to figure. If you run another game that is comparable to fidelity (RDR2 for instance) and it doesn’t shut down it is most likely the program.

Unfortunately shutdowns are one of the hardest issues to trace. Very time consuming as well.

This is what I would also look at my ram usage is always 15gig+

I think the game usage is depends on how many ram you have on your system. as mine never go over 12G

I really hope it is not my case.
It is only a 7 months old GPU and I did nto have any problem with it before the MSFS2020, even with the MSFS, I only have problem when playing MSFS. never in other programmes

It most probably was a bad power cable connection. unless you can re-emulate this shutdown. Nothing is bad hardware or software wise unless it happens again n again.

If it doesn’t, just replug all power cables and that should suffice.

Firstly, in 99% of cases if your PSU is bad it is indicated in the +12V voltage!!! Install CPUID HW Monitor and check that your +12V values are within + or - 5%. Normal voltage +/- 5%. So 12v would be 11.4 to 12.6 for example. if it drops below 11.4V you more than likely need to change your PSU.

Secondly, from someone who has had more than 200 CTDs since launch - and now has none - try changing your bios setup to auto!!! IE no xmp or DCOP. This will drop your ram settings to vanilla. OK horrible thought I know but I have 2 bios profiles - one for flight and one for everything else. My normal setup includes a fairly aggressive ram overclock from 3600 16 16 16 to 3600 13 14 14 14 on 1:1 FCLK - MSFS absolutely spits the ■■■■■ with this. My “FLIGHT bios” profile only does away with XML/DCOP but leaves my CPU boost etc etc intact. It’s the RAM tweaks that MSFS knocks me to desktop or completely reboots my PC. Just finished a 3 hour flight from Sydney to Gold Coast in stormy weather without a flicker .

I hope this helps - CTDs are soul destroying!!

Windows 2004 ? Which Intel-Drivers you have installed ?

upd: possible helpfull link

Have you had a look in the Event Viewer to see if it offers any clues?

Specifically, look in Windows Logs --> System and at Kerbel-Boot/Kernel-Power entries.

I recommend do similar tests/flights to see if same situation will happen. If not (after more tests) it can be sporadic electrical issue at your home which your HW is maybe more sensitive to this. I recommend also check carefully BIOS if you’re experienced, especially also to POWER management.

If he had same Windows2004 issue, the event log mention kernel power… which is just a lie

Thx for everyone advice.
Today, I unplug to of the case fans (use an external fan to keep ventilation into the case).
Switch the graphics quality to “medium”
Fps increase from 60 to 80,90. However, the GPU usage still remains more or less the same as 90 to 95% ( not sure if it means same power usage by the GPU)

I run the game for 90mins straight with no problem…

Next trial is to plug in the fans and keep the graphic quality and try again.
