I stole this from another forum. Has anyone tried this? supposedly it reduces the jagged edges and shimmering (even though we’re using TAA). See below:
Some of you might have noticed, MSFS uses an aggressive sharpening filter. Some like it sharp, fair enough, but I think the image looks much cleaner without it. Thankfully, we may now easily disable it. Also, there are better sharpening tools using NVIDIA Freestyle. Follow the link below for more info.
Search for your UserCfg.opt, open it with notepad. It’s located at \AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator\UserCfg.opt for regular installs.
At the bottom, find this list. Set Sharpen to 0, save, that’s it!
I have seen this mentioned on Avsim. From what I can see it makes everything appear softer/blurrier.I am on 1440p I do not notice much shimmering or jagged line even with sharpening on.IMO I find the in game sharpen does well on this resolution. @PistonSeaplane I will send a screenshot comparison
The last thing MSFS needs is to look blurrier, that and the near constant blue haze all day long is beginning to grind. I know why they do it, they will say it’s realistic, which it is sometimes, but its actually hiding how c rap the ground textures look at altitude.
Hey tnx for this I use a tv for my monitor and this was a serious problem i had to lower the sharpening on my tv to remedy it. It worked to an extent but it made other things like fb and YouTube look horrible. I’m gonna try this and see how it works.
On my monitor I prefer it on.Not sure if you will notice the difference.Off I found one advantage blurring scenery in the background. It is subjective by screen resolution.
I too use a 1080p TV and have screen sharpening set to 0 and post processing effects all off. Make sure your resolution is right. My facebook and everything else looks normal. The TV is 55 inches and about 2 feet from my face. Unless you have a CRT or 720p TV, Windows shouldnt look blurry at that res without sharpening. An HD signal shouldnt need sharpening
I just tried it and I think it actually looks better. Less shimmering, less artifacts in trees and clouds, less of that dithering that sharpening creates, less weird jagged lines aliasing through the propeller when I bank the aircraft left and right. There may be a slight performance increase too, seems smoother. I don’t know if sharpening effects FPS or not, it may just seem smoother because the image is less processed and sharpened and grainy looking. It looks softer, but more natural softer not blurry softer or lower resolution.
The benefit of turning off the artificial sharpening is mostly noticeable in motion with the elimination of shimmering and jaggies, especially in the distance. But, I took two screenshots from the same altitude and zoomed in on them. You can clearly see an increase in aliasing on the sharpened image on the left versus the smoother image on the right. You also lose the weird cloud textures and green dots trailing off the leaves in trees that always seem to look like aliasing when in motion
WOW! Looks so much better on the right (sharpening off)
I was trying to figure out why everything looked so bad with AA maxed at 4K. It was this sharpening filter.
To me the sim looks way better with sharpness turned OFF. No jaggies nor odd artifacts for instance in the water, which looks incredibly smooth and coherent without the stupid sharpness. This should clearly be a selectable option in the settings menu.
There is no setting in the game for sharpening. You have to edit the UserCfg.opt file with a text editor and change the sharpening to 0 (off).
If you have the Microsoft store version installed, this file will be in C:\Users\whateveryourusernameis\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache
