Brief description of the issue:
When selecting HDR10 features in graphics option, a percentage of the viewing screen “whites out” as if looking into extreme glare, blinding and preventing scenery from being viewed.
Provide Screenshot(s)/video(s) of the issue encountered:

Detail steps to reproduce the issue encountered:

PC specs and/or peripheral set up of relevant:
i9 10900
RTX2070s
Asus 32 inch curved 2560x1440p HDR QHD/2k 165 hz
Build Version # when you first started experiencing this issue:
1.21.18.0 beta

Strangely enough, that’s the way it was designed.
It seems to have been designed to replicate the effect of taking a picture through the window.
Many posts in here on that.
Personally, that is my biggest “gripe” with the sim.
I can put up with most others.
It is really annoying when landing, as it occurs at the bottom of the windscreen, making it very hard to see instruments and the runway.
Look up and it goes away.

I solved this problem by turning HDR off.

Well, yeah, but then, we’re having to give up a feature which is designed to enhance and improve visual experience. You could turn off a lot of stuff and get rid of the problems caused by it not working. Sheesh…

Hmmm…HDR has always worked fine for me. Screenshots are a different story, but what I see is excellent.

I find that the over-brightness effect only happens when not in fullscreen, or when something else is onscreen on the gaming monitor. If it’s fullscreen on its own monitor and not overlaid with anything, a tone-mapping operation is done to keep maximum brightness within the brightness of my monitor (in my case, a DisplayHDR 400 level monitor reports a max of 400 nits peak brightness).

Thanks, that’s good to hear. Maybe I can get mine working. One reason I posted this was to see if it has a possible solution.

HDR issues are usually connected to the monitor/TV you’re using rather than the GPU or software. It might also be a driver or third party graphic tool setup issue. I bought myself a new TV because HDR10 was always flickering and that solved the problem. So basically HDR is afunction TVs/monitors provide and the software only activates it. On xbox you also have an hdr calibration tool in the settings. Hope it helps.

It does help, if it is an accurate statement. But I would have hoped that this new monitor would not be flawed right out of the box----

ASUS TUF Gaming 32" 1440P HDR Curved Monitor (VG32VQ1B) - QHD (2560 x 1440), 165Hz (Supports 144Hz), 1ms, Extreme Low Motion Blur, Speaker, FreeSync Premium, VESA Mountable, DisplayPort, HDMI

Is anyone aware of this monitor being a bad product? Should I return it? I just hooked it up December 26th. I tried to select a reputable brand name. Are there known issues with Asus monitors?

Here’s another question---- The HDR10 setting can be enabled through Windows 11, as well as enabled in the monitor settings, and also through the MSFS graphics settings. Does it matter where it is enabled? I noticed that in MSFS the setting is grayed out unless it has been enabled outside of MSFS but what about activating it in Windows versus the monitor’s settings?

I hope that on this forum, I can find out what I can do from my end, or determine if I need to return the new monitor. All insight is much appreciated.

Happens to me in full screen.
I too would welcome a solution.

The game setting can only be enabled if the Windows setting is on.

As far as I know, a monitor can’t really have an “HDR on/off setting”; the signal from the video card is either in HDR mode or it isn’t.

(Note some monitors have an SDR color grading mode that’s called something like “HDR look”, but that’s not the same as using an HDR 10-bit-per-channel signal.)

Thanks for response. My monitor definitely has an independent HDR setting, in addition to the Windows setting.

When you select it within the monitor’s settings, then other settings become unavailable, but they cover that in the owner’s manual. For instance, light/contrast, warm/cool colors, other pre-sets are only available when HDR is turned off. The desktop and other viewable items on the monitor look fantastic when HDR is enabled. But, MSFS has its own HDR10 setting in graphics section. What I need to check next, is try to make a visual comparison with the monitor/Windows HDR enabled and then disabled, to see if there is a noticeable difference, all while having the MSFS HDR disabled. Because, the only thing certain is, HDR10 in MSFS graphics renders my view useless. Oh, plus I am now curious what the world looks like at night while HDR is enabled in MSFS. Will report back.

Thank everyone for the feedback. Any problems encountered are much less annoying when other folks are willing to take a look at it through the forum.

Don’t know if I checked it while in Windows mode. But I will certainly check, thanks!

I don’t have HDR but if I was stupid I could enable Dynamic Contrast on my TV/monitor. It’s designed for watching movies not gaming.

Yes, the Asus HDR setting actually has two separate modes—one for movies and one for gaming. And yes, I am stupid and I also know about dynamic contrast :upside_down_face::relaxed::crazy_face: as opposed to HDR. I actually had not even heard of HDR before getting this otherwise very cool monitor.

  1. enable HDR in windows
  2. enable HDR in the sim
  3. quit the sim and restart.

Restarting is a mandatory part so the in-Game HDR works. Otherwise it looks overexposed

Make sure your using 10 bit or 12 bit color as well, not rgb one of the other ones in your vid card control panel. If your using Nvidia its under resolution toward the bottom. Set your color for Cy* whatever it is, press apply, then click where it says 8 bit, and you should be able to select 10 bit or 12 bit, unless you use the cy*442 setting then it will only be 8 bit, but windows will hdr with 8 bit and that setting for some reason. And make sure you have a GOOD hdmi cable, at least 4k rated and not one of those cheap $5 walmart cables ;p

Oh… and I forgot: I had to stitch to display port instead of HDMI. I play 4K in HDR ok my 3080 and switching to display port helped

Thanks very much eklester! I can’t wait to try this out. And yes, a display cable came with the monitor along with hdmi, and I read where, when given the option, the display cable is the best option. But your simple step-by-step process makes good sense, and I know that I have not done in that order following by a restart. Will report back!

Thanks very much bubbablitz7348! I will definitely look in my nvidia control panel for these settings. I really want to think that this Asus monitor is a quality product, and that there are some settings I am ignorant about, as this one. Thanks again!
