I was off MSFS for a while and trying to get back. I have a strange problem: I get smooth performance and 30+ FPS on the runway (up to 40FPS if I disable Motion Reprojection), but after a minute or two the performance degrades drastically and I see the FPS jump 17-30 all the time, breaking MR and huge stuttering occuring. From that point, no matter what I do I can’t get the initial performance back: I tried going out of VR more and back, lowering graphic settings, clear weather, empty Community folder, restarting the flight - nothing helps.
It wasn’t perfect before on my high-end PC but all problems (lower than desired FPS, regular 1-second stuttering etc.) was always present or predictably depended on the scenery complexity. So it was flyable, albeit not amazing for such an expensive PC. I have installed beta SU10 and PDMG 737 and testing in JFK with “Broken Clouds” with otherwise empty Community folder. Now with DLSS / DX11 the initial part is so smooth and great, but then it becomse a stutterfest.
My system: 5900X, RTX 3080, 64Gb RAM, 1Tb system SSD + 2Tb MSFS SSD, Reverb G2.
MSFS settings: mostly High with some medium, DLSS Quality, DX11, OpenXR 100% MR on.
try enabling developer options, then within that disable volumetric effects. then fly, see what happens (you’ll have no clouds but will the fps drop?). this is a strange “solution” that i got from these forums a couple of months ago when my fps would suddenly plummet, it worked for me, i can’t remember the reasoning why.
Are you sure this happens also when you start VR mode before flight? This happens every time I (re)start VR mode during flight. Although it usually become apparent instantly, not after a minute. Always have to start VR mode before flight. I have no idea what software/update caused this.
Keep an eye on your Dedicated VRAM usage in Task Manager. If you start using Shared VRAM the sim starts to bog down. Try the test in a remote area with generic terrain to compare.
Well, you have 12 GB, I assume, so if you load up enough custom airports and scenery with a complex aircraft, you fill the dedicated VRAM up pretty quick. When it gets full the GPU starts swapping things in and out. There’s inherent lag when this happens. If your Dedicated GPU memory goes above 12 GB you should see a lot of activity in the Copy box.
But I made progress: I just had a great first flight, finally! The problem turned out to be with the SU10 beta. I was trying and trying and I could not get a stable framerate: today I tried maybe 10 times with full reboots, but I always got the FPS pulsing and horrible stutters. Once FPS started out nice (31 FPS + ~58% CPU Overhead) but it quickly deteriorated into a total mess, as before. All other times FPS pulsing started right away. So I gave up and switched back to non-beta SU9.
And lo and behold, it’s totally smooth, no FPS pulsing! I used 100% TAA, OpenXR Toolkit FSR at 80% (also had good results for up to 87%!), sharpening 100%. So it’s similar quality as DLSS, only sharper (but more aliasing/shimmering than DLSS). FFR on quality/wide preset, ultra clouds, the rest medium/high. I had an amazingly smooth flight in Cessna 310 in New Zealand, and then I rebooted and loaded the ultimate test: PMDG 737 in KJFK, short full flight to KHVN with Scattered Clouds preset, live traffic and all players. And it was smooth most of the time! I did have occasional small stutters, possibly when new scenery was loaded etc. - normal stuff for MSFS (unfortunately). But otherwise it was locked at 30 FPS MR + 20-50% CPU overhead for about 80% of the time, occasionally lowering to 22.5% MR but there was no regular dipping below that and no pulsing.
