If you watch this clips when different helicopters landing on spray trucks you can’t notice any bounce at all😂
So that’s a big BUG.
Yeah, it’s definitely a bug. The behavior is not how it feels in the real thing at all. On larger helipads, GE pretty much feels the same as the tarmac at the airport. Which is where you feel the most benefit. It feels slightly less prominent over tall grass/rough surfaces.
If you cross the edge of an elevated surface at GE height, you will feel a little bit of a bump up, but not a lot, and it doesn’t come with a yaw spike. Where it’s more dangerous is crossing the edge, from the elevated pad to the drop off. You can lose enough altitude to endanger the tail rotor.
As you are approaching the edge towards the pad, the GE bubble will start to push you back from the edge as soon as the rotor disk is near the edge. It starts off as a slight push, then once about 1/3rd of the disk is over the edge the bubble pushback is strongest, then it starts to go away, or allow you to pass and you can ease off the extra forward cyclic you needed to push past it. To avoid all of this, you typically make a steeper approach to the pad center and do a max performance take off so you don’t drop off the edge.
For smaller pads like the spray trucks, the size of the pad and height really just negates GE and you need HOGE power to set down on them. The helicopter is just a little less stable, or more sensitive to cyclic input due to the disruption of the downwash inflow.
I don’t have a ton of experience with elevated pads IRL, but those are the main points we worked on when learning them.
What a great explanation
I was disappointed that the latest update didn’t fix this annoying bug.
Can´t understand why this still appears. Did no person test the missions or helipad platforms? This jumping is annoying and makes landing challenges impossible.
I thank you that someone posted about this issue and looks like many agree that this is very unrealistic physics going on with these platforms. I post the clips that I even got from attempting to just land on a truck if it helps add to the support of this bug.
Without assists:
I then attempted it with assists:
I do wish they get to fixing this or I feel cheaty to have to turn on all the assists just to make it managable to even do it.
Hope this helps and I guess will simply vote this bug report up so hopefully they fix it soon as this last patch on 12/10/2024 did not fix this issue.
This is an perfect example here of the issue with grounded effect and raised platform. It’s very frustrating. during this video. I did not touch the control
It’s redicolous how this still are happening in the sim. So unrealistic
Yeah that a good example of the weird jolt that happens. Even though we don’t show our inputs in real time, they only need to repeat the situation and see it for themselves, so it not like we faking the jolt. Like it clearly repeatable in so many of these landing pads. Thanks for sharing the video that is very evident, I have never seen a helicopter in real life act like that.
Could be they haven’t attempted themselves to fly helos over pads (I would believe it…) or they have but they don’t think it is that relevant and that’s why 3 weeks after release we still have it…either way is bad, wake up Asobo
CFD on helicopters stops permanently and the helicopter is ungovernable for a few moments, this happens on any elevated surface approaching at low speeds.
I hoped that after the gigantic update released a few days ago, this very important BUG on the flight dynamics of helicopters had been resolved, unfortunately not! I hope it will be considered before any other bugs regarding helicopters, otherwise helicopters are just toys. This problem is not present on airplanes, because airplanes do not fly close to the ground but helicopters do. I hope it gets resolved.
This happens when you come close to buildings and trees too.
Microsoft and Adobe doesn’t talk about helicopter and missions system at all in the developer streams. I think they avoiding it because they know how bad it it in this state. Feels like they didn’t have the time to do it right in time.
Was looking forward to a good gaming session tonight but, decided to stop playing shortly after due to frustration.
I had to abandon the first AG spray job after x2 (long) tries and then x3 abandoned cargo hook jobs too due to below issues.
Tried my first helicopter Ag Spray job in career mode tonight and it was impossible for me to land on the refill truck.
There is nothing gradual about the ground effect when approaching platforms, trees or buildings - it goes for 0 to 100% in a split second.
I tried coming in so smooth, steady, slow and shallow to the truck and as I was getting over it, it shoots me up and sends me into a strong spin. Exactly like two repelling magnets.
(This is the same for cargo hook jobs too).
I had to abandon it the AG jobs and wait hopefully for a patch soon!
Decided I would try a helicopter cargo hook mission instead and dealing with the same ground effect bug from the building and trees at the LZ… not to mention the sling being so short requiring me to lower the whole helicopter BELOW the tree line making most drops so far from realistic and even impossible most often.
Trying to be positive despite the bugs but, between the ground effect bug and the SAR missions often disappear completely from my whole planet, makes it hard to set aside time to play and enjoy.
I didn’t want to share my experience in this post because I thought the reason behind my awful landings was my lack of ability to land helos. But if you say that the same problem occurs in regular parking position close to hangars/buildings, then I feel relieved. Tonight I’ll check if this is correct.
They were made aware of this issue at the preview event 3 months ago!! In the latest feedback snapshot it’s marked as ‘under investigation’. Yeah right, totally new and unexpected problem no one could have seen coming. I don’t expect a fix any time soon. Maybe SU 2, 3 or 4? This really takes the fun out of a lot of helicopter missions
Can’t be hard to fix this. The bug was in 2020 and they fixed it after a long time. Feels like it’s something else about his they don’t say.
Like the lack of trim in h125 there argument was that it doesn’t have trim in that version.
Maybe there calculations are right about the ground effect but it doesn’t work as it should in the sim.
It breaks the whole helicopter career thing. But they doesn’t seem to understand ut at all. Sound like a 5 min programming to fix it.
I have the feeling the CFD ground effect can only work with a mostly flat surface because the calculation assumes a flat surface below. This is no problem with rough ground or slopes.
But a vertical drop causes issues because the reference plane for the calculation in relation to the center of gravity changes in an instant. Seems like they’d need to split the reference plane up into small pieces that can be calculated individually and then need to be combined. But creating these calculations is computationally intensive and not that easy because they somehow need to interact with each other.
That is my theory of how things work. No idea if this is true. There are simple solutions like simply limit the reaction speed of changes but that will likely break other things.
Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?
• yes
Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:
• it is impossible to do hook cargo missions. I’m not the best helicopter sim pilot, but I KNOW I am not as bad as this is making me feel like I am.
If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:
•
had a mission with the h125 - mountainous area, trees - at the moment where I put the load into the drop zone the heli starts to jump and turn - it is not a flat area - if I should guess - 10-20 degrees…
I thought this entire post was worth repeating. It is a perfect summation of how the bug feels and its impact on gameplay.
