Help me to upgrade my 970!

Hi
Next year I would like to upgrade my 970. Yes, I know it sounds weird, but I refuse to pay 500-1000€ for a graphic card. I think it’s insane. But as it seems the prices has started to calm down a little bit (at least in the 2nd hand market) I think it’s a good moment to start the hunting.

My specs are: i5 12600KF, 16 gb and 700W psu. The most demanding addon I use is FBW and sooner or later I’ll go for Blackbird’s 310 too. Mostly I fly with the modded Caravan and only on 1080 with Trackir. I don’t have plans to jump into 1440/4K or VR. And I’m not interested on addons like Fenix 320 or very detailed airports with tons of passengers and beautifully crafted gates.

So, for a pc with theses specs, 1080, with the need of a smooth trackir experience (absolutely mandatory for me), mostly with GA flights and some FBW (no Fenix at all), no ultra detailed airports and with a budget of 350-400€, what would you recommend? a 3060ti with 12gb would be enough? or maybe a 3070ti would better option having trackir? Or maybe jump into 6800xt? And what about the next 4070?

I’ll appreciate a lot your help.

Regards

There is no 12gb 3060ti, the 3060 has 12gb and it is the slower card. Get the 3060ti if you are sticking with 1080p.
The 3060ti can do 1440p. You’ll be fine on high settings.
A card that cost 500usd is going into 1440p, 4k entry level territory.

If you think about a new, not used 3060ti or other 30…0 card I’d advise you to grab them now, as very soon they may simply disappear as their production is almost over - New Year prices are at their minimum now and I do not think they are going to drop in the future. If you miss 3060ti now you may have to wait for 4070 later next year and you have to be sure their connections are compatible with your PC.

Thank both of you for your comments. My intention is to buy in the second hand market. Right now, in my country, a new 3060ti is around 450€ and I think is too much. And I agree with you that we aren’t going to see more price decrease for these models. A second hand unit is between 320-350€.

As you told me, this card is enough for 1080p, but my concern is if it will be enough for a smooth trackir performance. I’m not sure if would be better to wait for lower prices for a 3070ti in the 2nd hand market.

I just upgraded my gtx 1070 to a rtx 3060ti. Very happy with my purchase. Looks beautiful on ultra. I stay at 1080p also.

I just built a PC last month with the following for 1080p gaming.
i5-12400, Radeon RX 6600, 16 GB RAM DDR4 3200 C16, 650W PS.
Gigabyte B660M Aorus Pro AX DDR4 MB, Deepcool AK400 cooler.
WD Black SN770 500GB Gen 4 NVMe for boot drive.
Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB Gen 3 NVMe for game drive.
Deepcool CK560 case.
The whole thing costed just below CAD 1300 pre taxes. I watched the items when they were on sale and bought them individually.

I’d try to get a 3070 between 300-400$ (you don’t need a TI). It’s still a lot of money for the 70 series of the previous generation, but it’s the best you can get if you don’t want to legitimize the fantasy prices they want to normalize.

I’m watching very interesting videos with a 3070 no-ti and trackir. Super smooth movements, even with Fenix A320. Much better than the 3060ti. Until now I was only focused on 3060ti and 3070ti. But these videos are changing my mind.

The prices for a second hand TUF 3070 are right now around 375-400€. Still, a little bit high, but very promising for how far could drop in the next weeks.

The AMD 6000 cards are solid GPUs.It is a great gaming experience if you’re aren’t too hang up on RT. The consoles have RDNA2 architecture. No surprise the AMD GPUs run well with msfs.

I have owned the 2060 super then upgraded to a 3060ti. My goal was to have most of my settings on ultra 3440x1440. Either way, both cards struggled to deliver smooth performance unless I enabled DLSS which looked worse in Aircraft equipped PFD. The sim also stuttered horrendously at payware airports like DD KMDW maxing out the VRAM. That was my fault as both cards are geared for 1080p gaming.

I found an RX6800 cheaper than a 3070 at a Microcenter last month. I had no major issues with the card as long as I used the recommended WQHL drivers. It turns out it is the best experience I’ve had in MSFS. A bonus, DX12 is finally playable but It does need further refinement.

Overall happy with the performance. Runs well in less demanding areas

Are you referring to the 6800 or 6800XT? I’ve read the post about how good card is the 6800 but I am not sure which of two they are talking about. They are very different cards, not only the performance, but also the price.

I wanted to inject my experiences as I have a 5900x CPU paired with a rx 6800. I upgraded from the rx 5700 xt and I am very happy with the rx 6800 performance. Very smooth at 4k with HDR turned on and ultra settings (T-LOD at 200) and locked at 40fps - a real breathtaking picture on my 55in QLED TV! I also use FSR2 which works very well - the only issue I have noticed is slight ghosting around the wheels when taxiing which does not bother me. The rx 6800 GPU is at 50-95% utilization and my 5900x is at 25-35% utilization (GPU 90-100% with FSR2 turned off). I am GPU limited under 2000ft and at larger airports and CPU limited at greater than 5000ft - what I consider to be the perfect balance for MSFS.

A couple of things to consider are

  1. GPU VRAM - more equals better performance on MSFS (the 6800 has 16gig VRAM)
  2. Power supply - the rx 6800 recommended PS is min 650watts whereas the rx 6800xt is min 750 watts.
  3. Make sure the dimensions of whatever video card you get will fit in your case.

I’m referring to the RX6800. I left the XT out in the chat. The two cards are not entirely different in MSFS. The XT variant will pull ahead in GPU bound games/ scenarios. Either Way, the RX6800 non XT is aimed for 1440p and it is faster than the 3060ti and 3070 but it will get beaten in RT.

If you decide to choose an Nvidia RTX card you have access to DLSS and FSR. Keep in mind you will be comprising resolution quality with either enabled especially at 1080p.

8gb VRAM is enough for 1080p however when you move to a higher resolution, run high detailed airports or switch to VR it becomes a limiting factor.

Thank you for your answer. Do you use trackir by chance? My intention is to stay on 1080p. While my 24" works, I’ll stay with it. So I’m not interested on DLSS or FSR. And respect to the RT, I don’t see it implemented on the sim in the short term.

Anyhow, I’ll check 6800 too. its very good DX12 performance is a very important point to keep in mind.
