Hello
Not played msfs24 in a few months so a little out the loop with any changes.
I’ve just set my PC back up and dialling in some graphical settings I’m happy with.
I have a 7800X3D, 4070ti super and 64gb DDR5 Cl30 6000mhz ram, I play on an LG G6 oled at 4k.
I only fly GA so find playing at 4k perfectly fine on my hardware and I don’t like to push the graphical settings too much.
I’m using DLSS performance, no frame gen, no dynamic settings, and mostly high with some ultra settings everywhere else. TLOD/OLOD 130
Nvidia app is all default.
I get around 70-80fps in the 172.
Once I see a steady fps I decided to cap the frame rate in the sim settings to 50.
All seems smooth and not seeing any screen tearing, which is my question should I leave vsync off?
Would I only enable this if I see screen tearing?
Thanks
That’s quite the TV you have there (12 bit color). This video is very informative on Vsync etc. Your TV supports Gsync and VRR. I would leave it off. I’m curious, why 50? I have mine locked at 40 for VR reasons. 30 is all you really need, but some find that too low depending on your eyesight.
If it’s smooth and you don’t see any tearing at all then I personally would leave it off.
VSync when turned on can induce a bit of latency. If you are happy with how things are set then leave it be. Of course, if you wish to experiment then go right ahead it won’t hurt anything to try.
No reason on 50 really, just felt that would give me some head room for where I was seeing uncapped fps at around 70fps.
I guess I can cap it lower.
I like to fly the A2A Comanche as well which I guess would be a bit more demanding than the default 172, so I will try capping at 40 I think.
Would VRR have any effect at capped 40fps?
I have vrr enabled in windows settings and on my tv (vrr&gsync).
What’s your lowest refresh rate of the tv showing in windows? As that is the lowest you should set your frame rate cap for VRR to work I think.
That’s what I was thinking, I will need to check but I think it’s 40.
You didn’t mention the exact model, but LG TVs generally have a 48 Hz minimum. So I’ll repeat what I’ve been saying for a long time: if the minimum Hz of your monitor or TV is, for example, 48 Hz, it’s better to keep your FPS from dropping below that value. So set the FPS cap to 60, or even 72 - this will also give you a lower MainThread and smoother overall performance.
My tv is the new LG G6.
Uncapped I was averaging around 70-80fps.
Your LG G6 most likely has a VRR range of 48-165 Hz, so you can set the FPS cap to 70 or 72 FPS.
Ok thanks, so with the cap at say 70, it doesn’t matter if it dips below that, just preferably don’t want it going below 48fps?
@TenPatrol
What’s the reasoning for a capping at exactly 72fps.
Also not 100% sure but I think I have to enable 165hz mode in settings which I haven’t done, so presume I’m at the default 48-120hz range.
This will also give you a lower MainThread and smoother overall performance.
Is this done in the sims settings “max frame rate”
I have the nvidia app but I don’t really change much in there.
VRR adjusts the refresh rate to match the FPS coming from the sim. More important is constant frame times, so locking max frame rate to 48 means frame times will not fluctuate. You should be able to maintain 48fps across your favourite GA aircraft. For me, I turn off Gsync, vsync, and VRR, and just cap my frames at 40 because OpenXR gives me 40fps based on my settings.
Yes, in the MSFS 2024 settings. Set Max Frame Rate and Vsync there, not in the NVIDIA app, because it works better when set in the sim.
In the NVIDIA app, in the MSFS 2024 profile, you can set Power Management Mode to Prefer Maximum Performance.
I tested yesterday with max frame rate at 72, and in the A2A Comanche I had a very smooth flight, I checked the in sim fps counter and everything was in the green and my fps was stable at 72fps, with only the odd dip when say changing from external to internal views.
No noticeable screen tearing so will leave vsync disabled.
Thanks
