How do you deal with purchases that you're not enjoying?

So there is no try before you buy here for add-ons. You try to watch as many review videos as possible, read as many posts and comments and then you make the purchase. Now I’ve had a few add-ons that I am not enjoying as much as I hoped. Some expensive! For example:

  • Hondajet: it’s ok, but I like the vision jet much better. I also think the HondaJet could do with some better textures. All in all it’s just a bit boring to me.

  • ATR: EFB and PFD/ECAM are not intuitive to me, with finicky clickspots. Just personal but I am not really enjoying flying this. I can see why others would enjoy it.

  • Black Square King Air: Fidelity is great but it’s just missing a bit of life for me. An EFB, interaction, visible pax/cargo, etc. It really does feel like flying an empty plane. And the sounds could be better.

  • Blackbox Shorts: this is the big one since I went for the full 50,- purchase. I’m not enjoying it. I don’t like the textures. I don’t like that it doesn’t have visible cargo, feels like an empty plane again. Flight model is good. But I want to use my PMS GTN750. I’d imagined the dev would add it after all the requests.

Anyway I don’t want to be too negative so I’m sorry for this rant, I’m mostly looking for people who have experienced the same thing? What do you do, how do you ‘accept’ it so to say?

Btw, add-ons that I have and which I find absolutely brilliant: Fenix A320, Ini A300, Milviz C310, GotFriends Wilga, FI Spitfire. Those are fabulous to fly.

Cheers guys thanks for reading

I try to research new planes more and watch videos. I know this doesn’t always work. If they are lame or I no longer fly them, I uninstall them.

I deal with it by moving onto the next shiny airplane that catches my eye.

I get angry over my own mistake not researching the addon more before purchase and then move on.

Ive been through this long ago and since i only biy from reputable developers with a long and positive track record.
Anything more exotic i only get it as freeware.

If anyrhing cstches my eye that does not fit that profile i wait till reviews and user feedback is available.
Not the day 1 reviews, i dont trust those as they are usually either from beta testers or incetivised influencers.

Honestly, I just uninstall and move on, so I don’t see it in my hangar. Lately I’ve been into Helicopters and bush type planes. Just because I can land them in tricky spots. I’ve been getting a little bored of just flying from airport to airport. I’m kind of looking forward to MSFS2024. With the built in action.

Get angry about my own mistake and move on.
I mean, we are talking about a hobby and it doesn’t cost so much, that I need to go to bed hungry.

Well they will not return your money so you may as well move on and write it off as a learned lesson. That is how life works in general though.

Simple. Uninstall and make a note of why I did not enjoy it.

I’ve become much more discerning about what I purchase by asking myself if the add-on I’m interested in meets my following criteria:

  • Does it suit the type of flying I like?
  • Is it in a part of the World I usually fly?
  • Has it had post-release updates?
  • Does it have good video reviews/user feedback?
  • Is there a good freeware alternative on fs.to?
  • Do I really want it or am I excited by the hype?

Compared to my P3D days, I’ve had far fewer regretted purchases and saved myself £££ by buying add-ons that meet my personal list above.

I’ve wasted a lot of money on purchases that didn’t satisfy me.
I’m trying my best to learn that the phrase “Day 1 purchase for me!” needs to be stricken from my lexicon.

I also find that reviews can be very deceiving, as the reviewer’s wants and needs often differ from my own. As such I will continue to hope that some day developers (including Microsobo) will see the light and start offering trial purchases. Not having that option has overall diminished my willingness to spend money on new aircraft/scenery, etc., regardless of reputation and product reviews.

If I still want to see it on the ramp, but have no interest in flying it, I’ll open the cfg files and disable it from showing in my selection menu. Otherwise, I’ll move it to a holding folder. If I had tighter budget, I’d probably be a LOT more picky.

My first purchase was the Carenado Turbo 182 just after it was released. I just did not care for the sound of the engine, and especially the fuel pump. Really my only big regret. I recently tried it again and was still disappointed, so it is gathering dust with a couple of hours on it.

My Just Flight Warrior was great. The Arrow was maybe a little too close the the Warrior, but the RG is nice. Those get a fair amount of use.

The A2A Comanche may have ruined me for any other airplanes. I spread my purchases out so I have time to enjoy them.

All hobby’s are expensive and if you’re a kid you’re limited by what you can spend, otherwise just spend your money and don’t worry about it because there’s way more expensive things in this world to regret buying.

Even if you only get 90 minutes of enjoyment from a $30 purchase you’re still on par with a $30 trip to the theater for a 90 minute movie.

Back in the FSX days I’m sure I spent $1500 on add-ons over the life of that sim, and 90% of it I used a few times and then went back to what liked best.

Delete/uninstall Cry, Buy something else to fill the void. Lament on why I did not like it, and try not to make that mistake again.

Me too with the A2A Comanche - this plane above all made me realise how (relatively) poor the others I’ve purchased are. My biggest disappointment was the Twin Otter. I’d feel better if there was a second hand market so I could flog my unused planes to someone who would like them better than me.

Buy. Fly. Cry. Repeat…

To keep it on-topic and hopefully not get my post hidden again:

That is the way I look at it. I don’t really have any regrets. Even if I don’t fly them again or very often, still it’s pretty good value made up for the fact I pay the same for aircraft I spend hundreds of hours in, so overall it balances out.

And having more aircraft Installed means I may see the correct aircraft in multiplayer more often!

You can always use them as conversation starters and learning opportunities. Make a post in the respective thread about an aspect of the model that don’t care for and you can be sure that a proper education on why you have no clue will follow in short order.

Even stuff that I do enjoy I use incessantly for a few weeks and then sometimes just move on to never return to them. Thats particularly the case for scenery add ons that I’ve bought. I’ll marvel at them for a few weeks and fly almost nowhere else only to then move in to the next big thing and pretty much forget that they exist.

Like everyone else here I’ve bought quite a few planes which I’ve just not liked at all for various reasons. Some study level, or near study level planes I just don’t have the time for. I sometimes buy things because everyone else raves about them and I want to see what the fuss is about. It ends up being a £30 curiosity purchase.

Then there’s the other end of the spectrum where there’s a plane I’ve got my monies worth X100. Pretty much anything but Indiafoxtecho and Hype fall into that category. Give me a sim with just the Hype choppers and I’d probably be good to go.

That would be great. Like in Eve Online there could be a whole economy and black market but you’d also need to fly and pick up your purchases. No teleporting. And we all have to buy fuel and repair materials to maintain our aircraft. The buyer can see how well we looked after the plane and the selling price could be reflected in the amount of extra repairs it may need to be airworthy. Basically NeoFly but between real players lol.

There’s few things I’ve bought I was much disappointed in. But I just accept it, and if I really don’t use it, I uninstall it. The more addons you have, the more time it takes to load the sim. I’ve bought many I rarely use… but that’s on me.

If it’s an airport, it’s because I have many I rarely visit. I only have one bad one, and I bought it through Orbx so I haven’t even bothered going after a refund even tho it’s broken. It’s not theirs… It’s some Alaska airport - I’ve even forgotten which

If it’s a plane, well, you buy new planes for the hanger but rarely are they so fun they replace the ones you already love. I’m still glad I have a good collection because choices are nice.

You don’t like flying empty GA planes but have no problems with flying empty airliners? The former is more common IRL than the latter.
