I would say surround makes a huge difference. I can’t have a dedicated surround sound setup, but do have a set of Corsair HS80 headset and the spacial audio works well enough that I can almost pinpoint where a plane is when spotting at an airport. I don’t know if it helps any, but those headphones are Dolby Atmos certified as well. If I had the space and funds, I’d be likely going with surround sound speakers over a 2.1 setup.
