Does MS plan to modify or correct some airport or scenery data in the future? If a third party installs some scenery, will MS add these scenery in the future? What if there is a conflict? Now there are too many addon scenery, can it be classified and managed in the community folder?
From the Wikipedia page on Bing Maps, apparently there are monthly updates of about 10 TB of data. However, considering the size of the dataset required to cover the entire land mass of the planet, this is a small part, and that results in some areas not being updated as frequently as others. Satellite imagery covers the planet, but Bird’s eye 3D views do not cover the planet. The latter permits seeing building sides from various directions. These are made from aircraft and not satellite imagery.
Another source (greymatter.com) stated that Bing updates the road infrastructure monthly, and satellite imagery on a 2 year cycle. However, I have seen another source (which I cannot find now but think it was Microsoft themselves) stated that in 2020 satellite imagery will be added on a monthly cycle. Again, remember that this does not mean that EVERY part of the world is updated each month, just portions of it. It could still take YEARS for areas to be updated.
I believe that MSFS takes the live data from Bing Maps so if the imagery is updated on Bing Maps it will show in MSFS (if you are using live data and have not cached it).
I agree that the Community folder is getting very cluttered! I did read elsewhere that you can rename folders in the community folder and MSFS will still find the add ons. I have not tried it myself though. If it does not work, this forum should be used to develop a standard for the Community folder, such as an Aircraft Livery folder, a Scenery add on folder (by continent or country, or airports versus city, country scenery) etc.
Having said all this, I do not know of MS plans to modify or correct the airport scenery, that may be up to the community with the add ons, making some sort of standard more urgent!
Yes, I have been wondering too if MS-Asobo will provide more free 3D Landmarks, POIs, airports etc either by doing them themselves or contracting out to developers. Not talking about aircraft here, but about “the world”. Do we buy some of the payware coming out, or do we wait to see what MS-Asobo does? For example, will the Orbx payware London Landmarks (which is quite cheap) eventually be included in the Sim for nothing, or will MS-Asobo continue to include more of their own London Landmarks. I know they all want to make money. I know the world is a big place and maybe we need many developers. But some advice from MS-Asobo on this (assuming they know themselves at this stage!) would be useful. I really was hoping, perhaps naively, that with the new Sim we would not need the hundreds and hundreds of add-ons we have with our other Sims! Cheers.
