Been loving the C700 lately but can’t figure out autothrottle. I set speed constraints into the FMS, move the switch to FMS on the autopilot panel, but it never seems to work properly and I end up having to monitor airspeed myself. What am I missing or doing wrong?
Have you actually engaged the AT with the button on the thrust lever?
Initialisation with take off data must be set in lower mfd. FMS mode with V speeds set.
Throttle full forward to TO detent, press TO/GA button on throttle.
Switch on AT (can’t recall if this is before or after pressing TOGA button, try both)
Once at suitable altitude, switch on AP with FLC or VS to desired climb rate.

I’ve been flying the Longitude exclusively for a couple of months now. Here is what I do so that Autothrottle works for me every time:
-
I find that the default speed settings are quite appropriate for flying.
-
I have already entered my flight plan and completed initialization in the G5000. That includes entering the takeoff performance data (wind, temp, etc) and I have accepted the V speeds given (including Vr and V2). I have also set my Heading and Altitude bugs in the PFD.
-
In my Before Line-up checklist:
a) Ensure the SPD knob is set to FMS (as opposed to Man). I never have to change this.
b) Turn on the Flight Director (FD button on the Auto Pilot panel). The PFD should now show ROLL and PIT.
c) Hit the TOGA button. ROLL and PIT now both change to TO and the command bars will rise to 10 degrees of pitch (off the screen at the moment)
d) Hit the VNAV button. A V will now show on the PFD indicating it is armed. If you have a SID loaded in your flight plan it will honor those constraints now.
e) Hit the AT button to arm the Autothrottle. An additional TO in white will now show in the PFD. This will change to HOLD when you begin your takeoff roll.
I am ready for line-up and takeoff now. Advance the throttles to TO (all the way forward) and release the brakes.
- After Takeoff checklist:
a) Upon positive rate of climb, retract landing gear.
b) At V2 + 20, retract flaps.
c) Hit the FLC button. This sets the Autothrottle to the CLIMB regime. No need to set any speeds here. The AT will aim for 200 kts at first, then 250 kts up to 10,000 ft, then 270 kts there after. If going above 30,000 ft or so, it will automatically switch to Mach speeds. All automatic.
d) Hit the AP button to engage the autopilot.
e) Hit either the NAV button or the HDG button, depending on that particular flight plan or ATC instructions.
I generally leave the AT on until passing the final approach point so that I have more (finer) control of my approach speed.
My checklists include other things like setting flaps, etc. but I have only shown what is pertinent to your question. Hope this helps.
I think I have. I push the TO/GA button. Seems I’m not engaging it at the right time, at least according to another reply further up.
But did you press the AT button? It’s a different one.
This was perfect. Thank you. Never noticed the AT button. Really have to look for it. I’ll give it a shot tonight. Thanks again.
