Hi, all. Sure there’s something here I don’t quite understand. If I start a flight from an airport that has a CT, I can request a IFR flight and have flight following along the flight. But if the flight starts on a towerless airport that option is not present in the ATC dialog options. I create the flight plan from inside the plane, in the ramp, using GNT 750.
AFAIK, it is not possible in the sim. You have to take off, contact departure, then request it. I’ve tried tuning departure on the ground, referencing the correct frequencies outlined on the plates, but the sim doesn’t have the dialog options for that once tuned. I’ve honestly given up filing IFR with the default ATC, and instead follow my IFR plan while taking off asking for VFR and sometimes flight following. Too many headaches with default ATC.
IRL when on the ground at an uncontrolled airport you would absolutely be getting your IFR clearance prior to takeoff in the vast majority of cases, either by contacting departure via radio or phone, or sometimes Center depending on airport, but that’s not modeled here.
Hi, Iconogr4phy. I’ve found a way to do it: You just create the IFR flight plan in MSFS world map interface, no matter high or low altitude. Then load the flight and then you can connect to Center and request IFR. After that you can delete the plan created by MSFS and loaded into GNT 750 or whatever, and create your own plan.
But that’s a poor way to solve it. I think we all agree that native ATC in MSFS has still a long way to run…
You can also use the pms50 GTN750 pull down menu version of the GNS750, to save/load the FP at will, when in FLY mode, without having to leave the plane.
I haven’t tried it in this sim, but back in FS9, if you were close enough to a towered airport, you had the option to tune Clearance there, like starting at 3A4 and contacting the KGSO clearance center.
Why deleting the plan created by MSFS? You can load plan from simbrief on World Map and use later the same plan in GNT 750. If you do it, ATC will give you correct altitudes and clearances.
No special reason, just that I like to create the plan using the aircraft instrumentation. With simbrief plans I cannot choose the starting ramp, or so it was some months ago. It’s part of the fun, jumping inside the aircraft and creating all with the Garmins from scratch.
That’s why I say that MSFS native ATC is incomplete. Once I had created the plan there should be a way to submit it to a Center and then trust ATC instructions. That would be nice.
