How to Change Screenshot Folder Back to Pictures\Screenshots?

So, I was flying just now taking screenshots with the same command as always. And as always before, the screen would just go dark for a second and the pic would end up in the \Pictures\Screenshots folder.

But then about 1/2 through the flight, when I took screenshots, a blue tab would pop up on the right edge of the screen that said something like “Screenshot saved. Click for Xbox Game Bar”. I really didn’t look hard because I was fighting Hurricane Ian at the time.

Anyway, it turns out that from this point on, my screenshots were going to C:\Users\Computer\Videos\Captures. I did nothing to change this and I hate it. So how do I get it back to \Pictures\Screenshots?

Thanks!

For my screenshots

  1. Using Windows Snipping Tool ( or Windows Snip & Fetch)
Screenshots go to the C:\Pictures folder by default and then to any new folder you select when you save a screenshot until you change the save location again.

  2. Using Xbox Game Bar
    Screenshots go to C:\Users\UserName\Videos\Captures folder.
This cannot be changed for the Xbox Game Bar

Fun fact, you can’t change the destination screenshot folder in Steam.
(You’re supposed to be able to, but It doesnt work).
2022, folks. Cant change screenshot folder in Steam. Impressive.

Oo-Wee!

Well, thanks for the bad news. Guess I’ll have to get used to the new thing.

But I’m still baffled. All this time in MSFS, for 3 years since the Alpha days, I have been using WIN+PrtSc to take screenshots. It’s a built-in Windows function and I have this programmed on the trigger button of my yoke. Screenshots taken this way have always gone to the \Pictures\Screenshots folder.

I did absolutely nothing to change this. Just suddenly, in the middle of a flight, for some reason my system went from doing what it’s always done to having the Xbox Game Bar start highjacking my pics and sticking them in the Videos\Capture folder. Maybe it’s because I tried Dx12 on that flight (which also caused issues with my keyboard, seemingly) ?

Weird. I sure hope switching back to Dx11 returned my accustomed screenshot functionality.

The Xbox Game Bar keyboard shortcut is: Win + ALT + PrtScrn.

Check your assignment for the Yoke button.
And check your Xbox Game Bar shortcut.

You’re missing my point. I DO NOT WANT TO USE THE GAMEBAR! I want to keep on going with the native Windows command that has always worked before. In fact, it still works. I just used WIN+PrtSc and it took a screenshot of this and put it in \Pictures\Screenshots as always before.

So why did the Game Bar suddenly start high-jacking my screenshots in the middle of my last flight, without me doing anything? And how do I keep that from happening again?

Maybe you were pressing “alt”? Or “alt” was stuck on the Windows keyboard state? Also, consider simply disabling the game bar:

Thanks. I don’t touch the keyboard to take screenshots. I have the WIN+PrtSc command mapped to a joystick button. But yeah, the alt key on that side does stick sometimes. Anyway, I’ll be flying again here in a few hours and we’ll see what happens.

As to disabling the Game Bar, I thought that was somehow necessary to run MSFS at all. I recall that sometimes when you try to launch MSFS and it fails to synch data, you have to go to the Game Bar and log out of Xbox.

Game bar isn’t needed at all that I know of, no. (I’ve never used it on purpose except to test screenshot file formats that it produced.)
