How to make unicode names in MSFS2020?

Hi,
I’m making a little mod that brings in a bunch (~50K) of city markers which are too few to my taste in the vanilla. Technically it is done with tags in /assets folder of a scenery type project. Somehow MSFS2020 does not understand utf-8 encoding even if I implicitly state about that in the xml root tag, it is erased and then ignored. Though I see that native city/POI markers do include fancy letters sometimes, so it is possible.
