I was blown away by Seb’s presentation today at the Q&A when he showed the possible improvement in FPS for Sim Update 5. If my memory is correct, keeping everything else the same, the improvement in FPS went from some 35 FPS to some 58 FPS from Sim Update 4 to Sim Update 5. That’s something like a 66% improvement in performance (potential 66% improvement in performance of course, some people may not get the same improvement in performance and it may be less than 66%, depending on the person’s actual hardware).
The problem with X-Plane and P3D is that they both need to improve their graphics to match MSFS. But by attempting to improve their graphics to match MSFS, the FPS will usually get worse, unless there is a major restructuring of code for X-Plane and P3D.
I have no idea how X-Plane and P3D are going to match MSFS in both graphics and FPS. This is a tall mountain for both X-Plane and P3D to scale. MSFS already runs pretty decent on a mediocre computer. Now MSFS will likely run pretty ■■■■ good on a mediocre computer after Sim Update 5.
As I user of P3D and XP I highly doubt they will ever match MSFS stock. That said with enough horsepower you can get decent FPS in P3D and XP. I have P3D and XP and both are absolutely bloated with addons and I’m seeing respectable FPS with both almost fully maxed out, I’m also running MSFS fully maxed out aside from resolution scale at 100.
Yeah, I have my doubts on whether P3D and X-Plane can match MSFS in both graphics and FPS. After Sim Update 5, MSFS will be super optimized, for the level of graphics it produces. What a crazy amount of optimization done to MSFS by Sim Update 5!
There’s no indication that they will push the graphics to match MSFS, and I highly doubt they would be able to even if they tried.
The “next-gen” lighting they showcased for X-plane looked quite good… for 2015 standards. It doesn’t come even close to what we have in MSFS.
The gap is too big and I don’t really see how they could even try matching MSFS in anything with 10% of the staff and much less than that in terms of resources.
