HP Reverb G2 + MSFS + Night time flying a mess, washed out?

I think this is a known issue, but, any type of Night flying in the G2 to me feels useless and washed out, it gets even worse when you turn on the lights (the cones of light that come off the wing of say M20R are quite bad even in 2D).

Everything is just to bright in VR with the G2… not sure if its the same in xp11 or not.
It is also like having reflections in the goggle lenses themselves in some way, hard to explain.

Are there any known workarounds to this issue? (i’ve tried turning off light rays in settings, its still too bright, black is not black).

Trying to figure out if its just my config or generic problem, although i guess seeing the light cone issue in 2d, im guessing generic.

Thanks in advance

Every complaint about something is not good enough is described as a mess (or disaster, or similar).

Night flying is unusable with the g2 on my system. If it’s just me do tell because I’d like to know

Night flying in VR (with G2 like you) used to be quite poor, but SU6 improved it significantly and it is now really good. Cockpit lighting can get a bit bright if it is totally dark outside, but that’s easily fixed with the various brightness knobs in the cockpit. The only issue I notice is that the G2 can show god rays from some light sources, but given the price point of the G2, the lenses are what they are.

In short, night flying in VR with the G2 is good enough for me.

The G2 is a bit poor with its Dark/Black colours, I’ve seen this in racing Sims (at night, obviously…!) and Elite Dangerous where Space looks slightly washed out, more Grey than Black if anything. Same with MSFS, it’s not quite right but that’s more the HMDs screen display than the Sim itself.

But that’s not to say MSFS it’s fine, it’s not. The daytime is a washed out mess at times (known issue and got worse with SU5) and for sure a bit of TLC with the night lighting wouldn’t go amiss.

It’s a pity that the sim is not offering even the most rudimentary display controls like brightness or gamma. With 2D display you can use display controls or graphic card controls, unfortunately this doesn’t work for WMR VR headsets like G2.

not only wmr, every VR.
Daytime / Nighttime is overexposed. A little bit better then SU05, but not the gamechanger.
At night, the poor black values of the LCDs also come into play. But that’s the way it is.

Monitor looks ok

To me even the lcd screen looks bad, the light rays coming off the wings dont look good at all and i couldnt figure out how to fully switch them off, seemed only half would.

Yeah the goggles for reverb do need adjustments and then night would be better, however its not as bad in xp11 as i tested it after posting this, but still a bit washed out.

Ill have to try to adjust the cockpit lighting at least, i didnt realize that was an option, at least with the few like the M20R and another I tried.

Is there a keyboard command to adjust that, or just find the knob somewhere and adjust?

The latter.

I agree with others that the G2’s blacks are a pasty grey though, but that’s just a limitation of LCD technology when seen up close. When I used a PSVR (which has an OLED display) to trial MSFS in VR before buying the much higher resolution G2, the blacks were inky at night.

Well i have to say after i turned off the recognition light, landing, and tax lights (yeah they were all on lol), things greatly improved.

When you turn any one of those on while in the air, it creates a massive light haze.
I dont do much night flying as you can tell  Not sure whats proper for mid air M20R, not sure if recog needs to be on in the air, guessing not and only strobe and beacon?

At any rate, cutting those on the wing really helps and it was fun to turn them on when landing or at least the landing ones.
